Would you buy a Cat C.
Discussion
I've had a cat C previously. Elise S1 111s paid 8k for it when going rate was 11-12k.
I think there is no problem with it as long as you kn ow the history of the car. I had pictures of the damage to car pre repair and could see what had actually been damaged in the accident.
I ended up spinning it in the wet and going sideways into a post. It was written off again and put back on the road (not by me). So now it will be a Cat C+C

Not the luckiest Elise in the world I think there is no problem with it as long as you kn ow the history of the car. I had pictures of the damage to car pre repair and could see what had actually been damaged in the accident.

As you say, it's all about going into such things with your eyes open (that's buying cars, not hitting posts!! ) If you know what's been repaired, you're happy with it and it's appropriately cheaply priced, then why not.
But, and it's a big but, I don't doubt there are alot of badly repaired, over-priced examples for sale out there.
Thread resurrection!!
Ive been looking for a cheap runabout which is a bit of fun, and found an MX5 - 1.8, mk1, honest looking car (and seller seems genuine) so ticks my boxes.
Did a quick car check on it and its come back as Cat C.
Car is only £1k - worth the purchase, or walk away and find something else?

At that value it makes no odds i reckon.
My 540i was cat C'ed a few months ago after somebody pulled out on me. Headlight repair, new bumper and wing and it's not 100% but back on the road. Bodyshop wanted £5.9k to repair, value appraised at £5.5k. It cost me £900 to fix and £500 to buy back....

To be fair the cat c happened in 2004, so its an old car and my thinking is that its so old now that any faults etc with the repair will have come to light by now?
Dont think the owner has any pics - prob not even aware of it as he only had it since Jan himself.
Prob plan to use it for 6 months and sell it after that - even as a Cat C prob be worth 800?

I think it depends what the damage is, and whether proof of damage and repair can be shown.
I bought a cat C, but it was written off due to the windows being smashed, and having paint stripper applied to the roof, bonnet and bumpers (I'm thinking pissed of ex). No structural damage, and as its a project it was no bother to me.
