Top SOTW though Riggers!
Brilliant summary Alfa numeric!

I know it's a PoS, but with its advanced design & centre-point steering geometry, it makes most modern rubbish look so old-fashioned. It WAS form the future, back in the 1970s.

A curse be on Retro-conservatism and those who can only judge by what something appears to be, rather than by what it is.

Just think of the old 5 or 7 or even an old SEC you could get for the money which would float my boat a huge amount more...
I think PH needs a 'blinkers' smiley - made up of a horse (or perhaps a sheep) with a BM 'propeller' over one eye and a Merc star over the other.

I love the CX, particularly the 'Prestige'; the extra length really adds something! 2400 Pallas also for me, rather than the GTI, and one of the early cars with chrome bumpers and those beautiful full hub caps. They are special cars.

It is a bit sad they're only a 4 cylinder...
The DS-derived four was meant to be for the poverty-spec versions. The versions you mention were meant to have a triple-rotor wankel, but the 1973 oil crisis & the bankruptcy which led to the conservative Peugeots taking contol put paid to all that.

Apparently, the PRV6 could be made to fit, but Peugeot wanted the miserable 604 to be top dog, & killed the CX V6!

But to admit in your user name to an affilliation to Fords means you're probably on the wrong forum.... In the 90's they almost lost their identity by producing things that were merely mildly restyled Peugeots, it's only more recently they have started producing things that have character and style.

But then I'm a bit biased and if I didn't already have 4 cars more than I actually need would be seriously considering buying this one. My first car was a Citroen Bijou, followed by an ID19 Safari. That was replaced with a DS23 Pallas which became the first of about 6 assorted DS's. The handbrake mechanism was interesting, as was rusted hydraulic pipes but nothing that couldn't be repaired easily with a bit of inginuity. The first of my two CX's was a chrome bumper (well, stainless actually as all Citroen brightwork in that era was stainless rather than chrome) Safari. Bought from an antique dealer who had owned it from new and done over 300,000 miles in it carting assorted bits of old furniture around. Unfortunately, it had the same habit as the D series, it rusted away while you looked at it (if only they'd given as much thought to the rest of the car as they did to the brightwork). The other was a CX2200 saloon. Although I liked them, despite the rolling drum speedo and other quirky bits, they were just too ordinary compared with the DS. The later plastic bumper ones are even worse!

There used to be a high topped (similar to the French ambulances) 6 wheeler painted bright purple that belonged to a French newpaper wholesalers. It did Paris to London and back to collect the English newspapers every night for about 6 years. I hate to imagine what the mileage on that one was.

Recently I was considering an estate of some sort and came close to buying a C6 but didn't. It had enough of the old Citroen in it to make it interesting but I could never have lived with the boring, looks just like everything else on the road, exterior styling.

I'd love a CX.

I had a good look round a lovely met blue estate just the other day, a MK1 with a very large sunroof above the rear two rows of seats. It looked great.

My dad had three Cxs in a row when I was a kid, all three of them with the spinny instruments, spaceship astray and stereo (yep we were posh then) ... they would have been awesome, apart from the fact they made me so car sick we ended carrying a bucket with us all the time, and they always started to rust within a year (which is the point my Dad sold them!!!) I don't what we did to deserve it but my Dad sold the last one for a Talbot Solara 1.3 urgh... I'd love to have one my Dad's old cars for a classic, they've probably gone to the great scrapyard in the sky now!!!

Didn't they use those six-wheel CXs to distribute the French papers all over Europe?

I will have a CX one day, but I'm not sure that I'd want one as my only car.

And, finally, to those who fear a hydraulic leak will leave you without brakes:

My experience of failed Citroen hydraulics is that you get plenty of warning and time to stop, with brakes that function normally, only if you ignore the big 'STOP' warning on the dashboard for several miles will you run into trouble. The system is designed (IIRC) that the brakes are the last thing to fail in the event of hydraulic problems.

Mine blew a hydraulic pipe with green goo everywhere but luckily at only 15 mph. No brakes, no steering and no suspension.

Thankfully the kerb stopped me. laugh

I wasn't sure about the wheels at first but they grew on me, and others that have seen it more than a few times. When they are turning, they look like flashing blades smileIt's gone through a few changes over the years, the paint will be on its eleventh year soon. It was a mai konics conversion car and it grew from there.

Glad you like it 'apart from the wheels' smile

Looks very very clean - personally I would have kept the standard wheels/colour, but full marks for keeping it on the road thumbup

I remember there was somebody on here who scanned loads of published car reviews - there was one comparing the CX GTi with the Saab 900 T16S, 2 cars I love.

Interestingly I think they both got 4/5, with the Saab being the sportier drive and the CX being the better cruiser!
