RE: Caterham Readying 'Entirely New' Car
Discussion
I think the likeliest is a XTR/Radical-style track car.
I'll be disappointed if it's just another 7 after the "entirely new" claims.
I'd love it to be an affordable coupe for road and track (Zolfe/Ginetta G40-style) but think that's unlikely.
Engine-wise - next generation Caterham motorsport engine... probably a turbo-Duratec but could be an electric/hybrid although it would have to be plug and play from someone else.

Project Splitwheel, I remember that too. So did that die on its arse or will the new car be the result of Splitwheel?http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... Breaking News: Public To Design New Caterham&mid=42525

I would have to say, on the balance of probabilities, this. mostly. Not sure about the power plants, but otherwise, that would be my guess.I'll be disappointed if it's just another 7 after the "entirely new" claims.

Personally would like to see a lightweight 2 door coupe in a similar vein to the G40.
Still think there is a good niche for this type of car and the nearest i could get to it at the time (in the context of the splitwheel thread) was a re-working of the 21 but on the SV chassis.
However, wouldn't be suprised if whatever Caterham do unveil it will be introduced in a similar vein to the G40 in that it goes racing 1st and road car 2nd.

Have Ginetta got onto the 2nd part of that plan yet? I check their website every so often for a G40 Road price list but haven't found one yet.alexpa said:

Maybe, just maybe, they've bought the rights to the Mk1 Lotus Elise and they are going to produce that for all eternity!!!
This is what my money is on. ewenm said:

Ginetta told me that the road G40 wouldnt be ready till the new year. I got the feeling I shouldnt go holding my breath!

That would do, prettier than a 7 (not hard) but of course more practical (roof, boot etc) will handle like a 7, go like scalded cat and use lights and instruments off of defunct Fords and Vauxhall, perfect recipe for Caterham :-)You could argue the Elise and the GTM Libra offer a similar end result in a slightly different (i.e. mid rather than front engined) package.

"The legendary Caterham Seven has been king of trackdays for what seems like an eternity, but next year there will be a new challenger! Aimed at the racing and trackday communities both home and abroad, the new Caterham is equipped with the next generation Caterham Motorsport engine, while continuing the lightweight and minimalist styling of the iconic Seven.
Will it be called the Caterham Eight? Will it spark its very own one-make series? You’ll have to wait and see! This fantastic new racing model will be unveiled on Thursday 13 January, and you could be among it"
It sounds like same old, same old to me.
Modernised 7 bodywork with a small capacity turbo lump (ring any bell's )

This... I said something similar a few pages ago. But when have minor details like selling the IP of Lotus' biggest cash generator got in the way...
If Lotus don't want to make the current Elise any more it would make a lot of sense to license it to Caterham and there is historical precedent. They don't have to give up the IPR. alexpa said:

Elise / Exige with Honda power would sell like hot cakes.
Please, please, please!!!The 1.8l (B18C spec R) out of the DC2 integra (and it's rifle bolt gearbox) in an Elise S1 type car would be puuurrrfect!

My first thought was to expect something like an Elfin MS8, to compete against the Mazda MX5 for sales.
But that's still effectively just a rebodied Seven which doen't qualify as an "entirely new car" so I'm hoping they go down the path of creating something like a GTM Libra. Small and light mid-engined road-legal go-kart with a roof.

Lots of speculation, mostly fueled by personal wish lists.
Here's what Caterham said:
"All Caterham will say for now is that the new car will be powered by the next-generation Caterham Motorsport engine and that it will "provide a logical expansion to the company's racing and track day portfolio" as well as remaining true to the Seven's lightweight, minimalist ethos."
From that description, I'd be quite surprised if it's road legal.

Slightly O/T, but does anybody know the likely fate of Elfin now that Tom Walkinshaw is no longer with us?But that's still effectively just a rebodied Seven which doen't qualify as an "entirely new car" so I'm hoping they go down the path of creating something like a GTM Libra.
