The first V8 Holden was the HK of 1968, this had the 307 Chev motor. The 308 Aussie motor came out in the HG model, this also introduced the aussie made trimatic auto in place of the 2 speed powerglide unit.

Not too sure what to make of this one - old, ugly, huge (imagine trying to park it in town/city).
I don't know why everyone thinks it's such a monster. It doesn't look massive in the pictures. If the stats page I quoted earlier is correct, it's almost exactly the same length and width as a new Mondeo estate.
I think that tells you all you need to know about the new Mondeo (and all the other unimaginative designs around) rather than the poor old Holden. We used to laugh at yank tanks back then...

Dammit!

I needed a car in a hurry a couple of weeks ago and saw this, but needed something to drive away. I, (sped admittedly), read it as the road tax had expired and moved on.

Dammit!

Rusty, unreliable (probably), impossible to find parts for, overpriced, more trouble than it's worth and pig ugly.

The perfect car!

I want it.
I agree with you entirely and I want it.

Needs airbrushed flames and an LS7 mind wink
Now I've had a few beers I totally agree!

I'm thinking matt black (done with a roller of course) to go with the flames...

I've always had the notion (not with this car, mind, but a muscle car of some sort) of having a matt-black paint scheme with gloss-black flames, so the car would appear an evil shade of black until the light played over the surface.

I cant believe nobody's picked up on them saying it's got an American engine in it. The 308 was 100% Australian designed and built.
Built yes but designed are you sure? **ducks for cover** boxedin
http://www.autoweb.com.au/cms/A_51435/title_Holden...

"Today, Holden employees gathered to mark the end of an era as the last Aussie-built Holden V8 engine came off the production line at Fishermens Bend, Victoria. Introduced in 1969, the Holden 'bent eight' was the first and only Australian-designed and built V8 engine to be produced in volume

Joining Holden employees at a special ceremony to salute the last Aussie V8 today were XYZ and 84 year-old Fred James, a retired Holden [Chief] engineer who was involved with the Holden V8 project from its inception in 1964.

Fred James said there was a strong national push for an Australian-designed engine. "We knew General Motors would be watching our every move, consequently our engine had to be better than anything else currently in production. I think we did a pretty good job of achieving our objectives," he said."

Kingswood Country - Classic awful aussie sitcom

For the record, wouldn't mind an HQ in brown, someone around me has a lovely version and I know it's not restored because the owner looks like he's old enough to have owned it from new...

This brings back memories. My cousin lent me one of these for a few weeks, when I was doing my backpacking thing in Oz. Although I think it was the v6 version. Driving to work one morning on the freeway, the drivers side window became stuck; and when I tried to pull it back up, it came clean out of the door! One hand on the wheel, the other trying to slide the window back into the door at 80 odd mph! What fun!

I had one of these when I lived in Australia, great machine. I once drove from the Gold Coast to Darwin, 2200 miles and it just burbled and rumbled all the way there. I miscalculated the time to get between two towns and slept out in the bush (don't drive at nights for fear of hitting kangaroos and camels). Didn't want to sleep on the ground, inside the car was too warm so lay on the roof. One of the best nights sleep I've ever had.

REgistered in '73 is OK as long as it was BUILT in '72 I believe.

I had an HZ (as per the car that donated its front end to this one) as my first car. It was the 3spd traumatic (sic) and a stock 202. The timing was out so it pinged and I thrashed it everywhere, especially from cold. So it blew up. I even made new panels for the "far-back" out of MDF and took it up to the pine plantations go offroad and cut my opposite lock tail-out teeth.

Ive emailed a proposition regarding this one but 900 notes is a bit steep considering there wont be anyone in the country who has ever grafted new metal over those panels before to replace the rust.

I dont know whether to be excited by the prospect or scared stless.

Top Shed and nicely linked to my PH username.
