Resurrecting an old thread to show my almost finished dashboard.

Not often your get a chance to do some serious automotive design and its been great fun and a lot more difficult than one would think.

Strange thread revival!

Before my morning visit to Pistonheads, I check my Hotmail email, when you sign out you go to the MSN homepage, this was the opening article:

https://www.msn.com/en-gb/cars/enthusiasts/the-wor...

Thought, that's a strange article, then I come on here and this is at the top!!!

It’s an interesting thread. For me, the cost savings exercise of today’s cars where the dash is designed not to focus on the driver like the old wrap around style but to focus on the savings from being able to simply stick the wheel on the other side is a great shame.

It’s such a strong physical image that repeatedly tells you that your car is mass produced and not remotely bespoke or special. Obviously the cars in question are none of these things but that doesn’t mean little tricks that help you to fool yourself aren’t important in the world of design and aesthetics. A dash that focussed all functions and controls at the ‘pilot’ is one of those clever tricks. It was nice to be selfish.

I am a fan of BMW interiors, the current Z4 for example

The TVR interiors are my favourites.
Agree on the e89 Z4 - the car itself is not the best drive, but I really liked the interior.

TVR dashes are a bit hit and miss - the Griff/Chim dashes dull, trying to be 'classic' - Cerb and later quirky and interesting.

Very practical for those driving moments when you need to know the time in Buenos Aires, what depth you’re diving to, the barometric air pressure and what year you’re traveling to all simultaneously. biggrin

The instant I saw it, the song popped into my head:
"Bang, bang, Chitty-Chitty Bang Bang....."

I like the bmw f10 (2010-2016 5 series) dashboard particularly as the screen is integrated. Not sure why manufacturers insist on making them look like stuck on tablets unless it's to make upgrades easier.

What function do they all serve; I guess clock, revs, speed, temp, oil pressure, volts, fuel, but then I run out of ideas; oil temp? Fuel pressure? derr...

Oh, I said time and volts, but you're right, obviously for an older car amps are more appropriate so yes we can add atmospheric pressure to the range of information...

You need a passenger to read the dials for you.

Or the correct prism angle in the left hand lens of the driving goggles?

It’s such a bonkers dash it’s superb. But I’d be disappointed if the owner wasn’t Ron Mael’s doppelgänger.
