RE: SOTW: Arctic Cat EXT 550/Panther Snowmobile
Discussion
Great SOTW. Not exactly a car but still motorised. Need more bike style things and other things with pistons
all you need for this snow is good snow tyres. Even my brothers landy 90 struggles with ice. Snow is not a problem, ice is slippy with 2 or 4 wheel drive. Set off in 2nd gear, use 1st gear for breaking (engine breaking) and you should be alright. Took my little 1.4 Pug 306 up to the hills to walk my dog, not a problem as longs as some idiots don't stop infront of you on a hill!!!!!
And 4x4s coming to SOTW or and motorbikes for the summer?

Have you ever been on one of these? Awesome. Iceland on the glacier - brilliant, 100kmh on pack ice, right laugh (tip: dont race from a standing start in-line behind someone - chunks of ice from the back of the bike in front will fly at your face). Quebec in Canada even better- thousands of miles of snowmobile trails you can let rip on. I want one

These are what you want ..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaTPn_2Z8tg
Those may well use standard mx engines, but for more off-piste stuff I believe they use stuff like a turbocharged Husaberg - 550/650cc single making up to 100hp or so with turbo, yet still only weighing 120kg (+ snow bits).
Emergency services could do with a few Snowmobiles, etc. REALLY.
I did'nt get one for christmas
However these look quite diy'able & you can buy the basic truck for a few £'s how do you make tracks?

Surely some enterprising person here could produce a few for hill farmers, paramedics etc.
When you think of how much people WILL lavish on their vehicles for cosmetic crap, a set of bolt-on track units would be well worthwhile if you live in the middle of nowhere.

Quad bike would be more useful!
They're not.I have one.
If the snow's deep enough that it's higher than the bottom of the plastic wheel arch/splash guards behind the front wheels, you're stuffed. Had to push mine up a snowy hill last week when it got stuck. It weighs quarter of a tonne
