I have just purchased a car and after trying endless quotes to insure it I end up opting for one company. I need this car as my van has just broken down, so I click the buy it now button and purchase the policy in full. I then get an email telling me the insurance will not be valid until someone from them contacts me, WTF. I ring the CS number but offices are now closed. Wont be open till after Christmas most probably.

So I have had to spend another £50 on day insure. Is every industry in the UK populated by shysters nowadays. No matter what you try to do nowadays it seems to be loads more hassle than it ever was.

I don't know how they can live with themselves letting the sales staff have Christmas day off. How dare they!! I think you should write to your local MP.

Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think that was the OP's point.

If you are going to sell insurance online, you'd better start the cover from the moment you get paid. Not charge them in full and then say by the way, you have no insurance yet until we contact you...

Now that is crap!
They should have shut the online site down if it needs Human backup!
I'd be naming and shaming this one.

I'd wager they only want to ring you back to sell some add on's. They will no doubt try this again a couple of weeks down the line if you say no too. Maybe that's just Admiral though...!

It's always a bit dodgy relying on insurance until you've got the Certificate in your hand in case it's wrong. Stictly speaking you're not legally covered until the insurance company has "delivered" (by email counts these days, but most send the Cert by post) the Certificate to you.

I insured my daughters car a couple of mths ago and they (a very big and well known insurance company) set it up for last year so the cover expired 2 days after we took it out.

Here's another perspective (applies to all products & services purchased).

I have spent ages looking for the cheapest version of the product / service I need.

Despite me buying the cheapest, I expect a gold-plated service that would cost them so much to deliver, that the service I purchased would be even more unprofitable.

Why don't companies offer things at a loss all the time, especially as I couldnt be bothered to plan ahead and think I may need this cover, instead waiting until the day before the longest working break of the year. This is compounded by the fact that most companies shut down around midday today and those that were open would probably call it quits at 4pm, so I waited until 10 minutes before to do something important.

Oh and I bought a few things online this month, despite paying in full for them at point of sale, they did not magically appear the moment I had paid for them. I had to wait another few days for them to appear on my doorstep.

Please don't shout at the call centre agent when you do get through. It's not his/her personal fault nor can he/she do very much about it.

Well I'm probably paying more but I use a company local to me, that have a branch where I can go and speak to real people.

I also get quite good personal service, and they are open Mon - Fri 9:00 -> 5:00 and Sat 9:00 to 1:00.

So much easier if I need to go and fetch the certificate too.

For this, I'm prepared to pay a little more.

I left taxing and MOT-ing (real word?) my snotter Golf until the last minute. Discovered that I'd lost my V5, can't get a replacement (and therefore tax the car) until after christmas. Who can I blame?

Anybody, apart from yourselfbiggrin

Here's a company who will sue for the emotional distress you've undoubtedly suffered, through no fault of your own.

In reply to the OP then, yes, they're all shysters with an agenda to squeeze every penny from real people.

You need an MOT first. If you get that done, then can't you tax online?

OP - what you could have done (depending on how much more the 2nd cheapest quote was) would be to insure with another company which could provide instant cover and then after Christmas cancel the original policy under your cooling-off period rights.

The only problem with that being you cant have two insurance policies going on one car at the same time....

Or he could have stopped chasing the cheapest and got oe that actually met his needs, instead of the false economy of then paying £50 for some short term insurance.

Oh and you can pay for and have as many policies running on one car at a time as you like. The problem comes when you try to claim multiple times.
