TBH honest I always though it was odd they didn't do a diesel. The question should really be should they do a SUV (no from me)?
Bearing in mind it's their best selling car and it keeps them making the 911/Boxter/Cayman, yes. I find it pretty abhorrent as a car, but I have no problem with them making it. I'd have no problem with the Panamera also had they not made it look like a long snail.

I don't see how 7.8 seconds to 60 is "leisurely"
Especially in a 2 ton SUV.

I liked it, I test drove one vs. an X5, X6 and a RRS back in July.....I plumped for the X6 purely due to the extra performance that was on offer, the handling was decent and comparable to the X6 and I think it was probably a nicer place to be, but mid 7's 0-60 is nothing special, 240bhp is not enough for a 2.2T car, it needs 300bhp+ IMO or the compromise is too great

I've had one a couple of times when my car's been in at the OPC. They're great fun, however they are fking massive, as in seriously, just go take a walk around one at a dealers, they are impractically huge IMO.

The Cayenne was a car that in 2004 I reckoned was the most pointless, ugly, inefficient, overweight, tasteless thing ever. But have you seen how cheap they are secondhand?!! There are loads under £9,000. At that price, I might just forget my principles and values...
I recently got a 2003 Turbo, yes, its the first car that I never look at my reflection in shop windows but my god it's a good car otherwise.

Having driven the Cayenne Diesel I must say it is very impressive. Foget the Porsche / Diesel issue.
This car handles and drives like a sporty estate car. It's got oddles of torque and the steering is what you would expect in any porsche let alone a 4x4 SUV. Great handling, I was very surprised considering the weight.
I wasn't aware of the eight speed gearbox until I flicked through manually, it never seemed like it was constantly changing gear! I must say that I found it great fun and rewarding. Ok it doesn't have the noise of a Porsche but everything else is up there. Hat off!

Nice motor, perhaps not to everyone's taste though.

Don't have an issue with the engine choice really either

But for me it's not in the same league as a full fat range rover, particularly with the new 4.4 tdv8.
It's more comparable with the RR Sport rather than the Full Fat (size and price)

it's not that it's a poor time for an SUV.

It's a poor time for a "porsche" SUV, particularly when all of the competician, and one or two a peg below, will sell you a quicker one.

What a vulgar vehicle ! I just don't 'get' these at all.
Probably because you're not their target customer. If you were in the market for a fast 4x4 with a budget of £60k you'd surely try all the offerings, which would include the Cayenne. Maybe then you would 'get' it and prefer it over the others... or maybe you wouldn't.

Mind you I guess all big, fast 4x4s are vulgar really. My neighbour has a Prius - it's certainly a lot less vulgar, but they're not for everyone either.

I see carpervert (johnny smith) is currently slating the same car on twitter.
Journalists' opinions are as valid anyone else's. I remember Clarkson slating a Cayman when they first came out but it didn't change my purchasing decision. 3 years later I still reckoned he was wrong.

You get used to it. We've got quite a few width restrictions where we are and have no problem now we've had it for a while.

I thought the competition were all about the same? i.e Touareg/X5 3.0D with the XC90/Q7/RRS being alot slower.

What's it do to the gallon?
I often get 700-ish to a tank. Lowest I've had is 520, highest 812.
But how big is your tank?

Time to stop being so precious, I think. No magic in the Porsche badge anymore.

Move on, Porsche have, why not join them?

It's a diesel Volkwagen Toureg!

Thankfully there are enough gullable and tastless people out there that buy these 'high profit' shared platform/brand cars allowing Porsche to invest properly in developing the excellent 997.

No doubt the ultimate chav status symbol.
