I often get 700-ish to a tank. Lowest I've had is 520, highest 812.
Wow. Considering i only get 400 miles from the petrol Toaureg that is amazing.

Almost enough to justify one!

It's a diesel Volkwagen Toureg!

Thankfully there are enough gullable and tastless people out there that buy these 'high profit' shared platform/brand cars allowing Porsche to invest properly in developing the excellent 997.

No doubt the ultimate chav status symbol.
For a brand consultant you seem to have some pretty spectacular views.

I'm sure you dont use that argument when justifying that your 1972 Beetle is almost a 911 RS.

Indeed. The 800-ish is from mainly (95%) motorway at 70 with the cruise on. If that lot was done at 50 I can see how you can get near the "London to Barcelona on one tank" claim that Porsche make.

It's not.
it's not that it's a poor time for an SUV.

It's a poor time for a "porsche" SUV, particularly when all of the competician, and one or two a peg below, will sell you a quicker one.
I thought the competition were all about the same? i.e Touareg/X5 3.0D with the XC90/Q7/RRS being alot slower.
Dunno what they stuff in the volvo, but merc/BMW/VW/audi/RR will all sell you a V8/10/12 derv IIRC

Seems daft the one branded with the biggest sporting pretensions can only compete with their lowest offerings!

At least the turbo makes "some" sense as a "porsche", in that it's got stark raving mental performance that few other SUV's compare to.

Ah sorry when you said competitors I thought you meant at the same price range? Agreed, the Cayenne Turbo is probably the fastest SUV point to point on sale today though...

Not sure a RR could do this....

Anyone know why the use a different engine for the Cayenne Turbo rather than just sticking the one from the 911 in?

I think all the vehicles in this market sector have their own image problems to contend with. The X5/X6, well they are BMWs, the Q7 is pig ugly, and the RRS is driven by hooligans and wears ridiculous daytime jewellery.

As a Brand Strategist I find it pretty easy to rationalise why Porsche chose to make this car. As has been pointed out, the looks are subjective, but I think on every other level this competes toe to toe with it's rivals.

I would imagine differing torque and power delivery specs and the fact that the Americans and Chinese probably expect a V8 under the hood.

Time to stop being so precious, I think. No magic in the Porsche badge anymore.

Move on, Porsche have, why not join them?
+1

Most sensible post on the matter.

But I do think its a shame they didn't at least stuff a diesel V8 in there but then it wouldn't have the economy claims (london to barcelona etc) that diesels NEED to sell.

For some MPG figures and assuming you still have about 10 litres in the tank when you fill up:
812 miles in 90 litres = 41.0 mpg
700 miles in 90 litres = 35.4 mpg

Pretty tidy for a 2 ton + vehicle on the extra urban.

I've always been in the minority with cayenne's as i think they are one best looking SUV out there, the latest variants especially so. Not that I would have an SUV as I'm not a farmer or pikeyvanner.
Since VW own Porsche its likely that more niche Porsche will arrive, but I hope the marque is not diluted much more.

Also find the Panamera is a stunning vehicle but maybe a bit Germanic in its approach....maybe when hey are down to 50% I'll have a turbo ... the ultimate hot hatch

I don't think the Cayenne and Panamera dilute the brand though. I think they enhance Porsches offering. Ultimately they are still high performance vehicles, even the diesel variants, so they still stick to the brand ethos.

I am still trying to understand why quite a large majority of Porsche fans do not like this car because it is an SUV diesel. I know Porsche said numerous times they would not build cars with diesel engines but they got left behind, in the past!!! The Cayenne is the back bone of Porsche, their biggest seller and its seems the UK is the only ones not buying into the idea but the rest of the world including the country who makes it is! At the end of the day if they did not make it they could not be able make the sports cars you love. I have heard there is almost a years waiting time to get this car already too so it must be a winner in someones hearts. I could not afford to buy it yet but it would definately be one to consider if I could. Yes Range Rover is true thoroughbred 4x4 but is cheaply made and overpriced, if it wasn't the fact is was UK brand and the "to be seen in car" by those people who wear green wellies, it probably would not do so well. They made a hybrid Cayenne too don't forget and hybrid will be on the 918, that could only mean it will end up in the all of their cars in the near future?

Good looking, comfortable, nippy(for a diesel SUV), 30+ mpg and it handles well. What's not to like?

£ for £ it has has to be the best car of its type.

The only niggle is the Audi sourced diesels ouput as they could have at least got a few more horses from it, but that's easily solved.

Surely, £ for £ for its type, the Skoda Yeti diesel beats it hands down ? Probably more practical as well.

Just a thought.

I like the Yeti but I wouldn't put them together as competitors as they are different interms of size, performance and price etc...
