Interesting that this was fitted to a Mk3. As noted above the Mk3 engine was supposed to be a bit weak and the Mk3.5 was strengthened...

Also interesting that BBR are doing supercharger kits now as opposed to their original turbo kits for the Mk1...
Thats what I thought, expected to see it done to the 3.5 but I guess its abit new for that?

Looks perfect. Interesting that the more Lotus announce their intention to move away from their lightweight roots (though I'll reserve true judgement until the new Elise is out), the more manufacturers seem to be filling their place.

Now the MX-5 has Cosworth input it's almost as though they really are building the Elan in all but name. If the new Caterham turns out to be the old Elise we may end up with, in spirit, a four-car Lotus lineup available from companies that aren't Lotus - the Elan (Mazda), Seven (Caterham), Elise S1 (Caterham?) and Eleven (Westfield XI).

Still prefer the mk1 mx5 and the BBR5. But this again looks like a nice big of kit. Warranty as well with a supercharder is handy!

I like MX-5 Mark I and this current version a lot.

This cosworth treatment gives the thing some serious "UMMMMPH".

Is it also available for the Mark I 1.6 or 1.8 l version (the one with the pop-up headlights)?

Not sure - they certainly do a turbocharged version of the Mk1 (with a cool-looking air duct running through the back of one of the headlight lids).

5k for a supercharger conversion and people still complain?
I don't know if people realise just how little gain you used to get for so little horsepower when it came to N/A tuning. Flowing heads, porting and polishing, cams, etc all used to be expensive work and for comparatively small gains.

£5k all in for this kind of power increase is an absolute bargain.
Exactly my point... If the SC conversion on the Tuscan would have only been 5k, hmmm...

I'd love a go in one of those!
Really starting to think supercharging my car could be the way forward! driving

So would I! Although rather the turbo option, mate had a green mk1 mx5 turbo'd with 160bhp where I used to work a few years back. Really wished I'd got the chance to go out in it now! frown

I will own one oneday, just to itch that scratch before the Elise! biggrin

Alot of the MK1/2 MX5s on here are Forced Induction.. Russ' MK2 is running just over 200bhp, Lazzas is more I think.

BBR said they deliberately picked the mk3 over the mk3.5 to use as a test car/demonstrator to try to show that there was no inherent weakness with it and it was just down to poor mapping previously.

I spent about the same to get 100 BHP on my S2000
I'll bet this is a hoot to drive now!
+1, I remember driving the first BBR turbo MX-5 back in the day, that was less than 150bhp IIRC but even with that it was brilliant, I just wonder whether there are any traction issues with the new one.

Hornetrider,
It wasn't an article. I went down to BBR and it came up in conversation. Because of the problems previously had by Cosworth with their mk3, they wanted to use a worst case senario. If they'd have done the conversion on a mk3.5, all the possible customers of the mk3 (biggest customer base) would still be reluctant because they wouldn't have proved out the reliability issues. Hope this helps.

Guys, forgive me for being a bit thick, but this kit will fit a mk3.5 won't it?

As i understand it, it hasn't been fitted to one yet but the only difference under bonnet is the air tube through the bulkhead. The header tank for the charge cooler sits about where the tube is but i believe this can be relocated.
The cosmetic cover on top of the engine has to be modified but it does on the mk3 as well.
