Many thanks - thats great and much appreciate the quick and informative reply ..I've a MWB MED Roof FWD transit and have got stuck a few times in bad weather and grass etc so was just looking at the AWD option as there's been a few on the market recently - I get about 33-35 MPG out of my MWB so the fuel doesnt sound so bad and appreciate what you say about being realistic with its off road - very many thanks again

Back in the day it was County (tractors) that converted the Transits to 4wd.
Back in the day my Dad was the chief demonstrator at County Commercial Cars and did a lot of development on the transit and if I remember rightly the transmission and axles were from Chrysler Jeep.

I remember him taking all our camping gear to Scout camp in one and then showing off by driving up and down a very steep bank. That would have been the very early 80's

I'm now heavily involved in rallying and I still see the odd County Transit sat on the start line of special stages working as rescue units.

I believe after County failed in the mid 80's production moved to Wales/Welsh borders and last time I bothered to Google you still buy a conversion from the company who bought the carcass of CCC.

If anyone is interested in County tractors, the big wheelers, my Dad has written a biog of his time working for the company called The Best Job Ever

V. interesting. That's Dad's christmas present sorted, thanks! I was at a farm the other day that had 5 county tractors lined up in a shed. Going to be picking up my first next week.

Where was the farm?

County's still seem very popular by those that know tractors and if I had the money and space I'd have one to re-live my childhood as they were the best climbing frames ever LOL.

Mid Norfolk without being too specific. One was ex-BAA from Gatwick!

Also had a v.nice Roadless 4wd Major with a massive winch.

Yes County and Roadless will always be popular because they are based on the already-popular fords and fordsons, are quite rare but also robust, reliable and perfectly usable. There's plenty still being used.
