Going to need two new tyres for the barge ('00 528i) soon. And I'll take the opportunity to match them to the pair I had fitted about 10k miles ago (Falkens).

The spare (Michelin) is unused since new, so now over 10 years old.

I'm thinking maybe I should dispose of the spare and replace it with one of the worn (3mm tread) Vredestein tyres that I'm replacing.

What do you think? Is a tyre that old potentially risky?

Its UV light damage from the Sun that damages tyres. However as its now 10 years old and you want peace of mind. Just swap it. Chances are though it will be fine for an emergency.

Keep your spare as a spare...

As long as it hasn't been in one of those "slung under the car" holders where it gets perished from water and salt, I wouldn't be too worried about using it in an emergency.

In the meantime, tyre technology has moved on a lot in 10 years, so I would stick with new tyres on the car.
