Brace before impact...!
Discussion
also, take your foot off the brake, as you are less likely to suffer leg injuries as your leg can move around the steering wheel, instead of being stuck between the pedal and steering wheel.
try explaining to the crash investigators why you weren't braking though....
ETA if you are about to crash and you have enough time to contemplate what is going on and decide whether to go limp or tense up I would imagine the crash is avoidable... unless you are on sheet ice and are sliding towards another car....

As a passenger - floppy every time, you have no control so why not?
As the driver - every 5 mph you can scrub, every degree away from head on = the potential to avoid the crash and even in the worst case will result in lessened injuries both for you and your passengers. So keep fighting the "inevitability" of a crash, keep braking till the last moment, and if all that fails then at the last moment before impact, brace.
For a driver to let go of brakes and steering = scary IMHO. To have time to fold ones arms and deliberately go floppy = negligent
Reminds me of an old boyfriend of my sister with his Astravan - if I'm going to have an accident I'll just jump in the back (among the circular saws, hammers, transformers, etc.)

Depends on the situation, as a young scrote I used to 'drift' my lowered Mk3 cav round the same corner every day for months, one day it was greasy and the tail came round, I tried a dab of oppo, it snapped back, went the other way and all the way round...I hit the inside kerb of the roundabout and mounted it backwards bent my rear wheel under the car from then on I was skidding backwards and sideways on the grass for about 5-10 seconds thinking "let go of the wheel you can't save it now and all you'll do is break your wrist when you hit something..."Although time slowed down, I didn't have the balls to try a three wheeled J-turn
For the record, no bones broken but a massive dent in the ego back then.
Edit: It's late I can't type straight.

Now thats an interesting one...
Should you let go of the steering wheel too?
I was going backwards so it wasn't like I was going to slam into the wheel when I stopped, of the times I've run into the back of things facing the right way I've usually kept hold of the wheel to brace me from nutting it but that was back when my cars didn't have airbags though.Should you let go of the steering wheel too?

Did they not have seatbelts either???As mentioned, Drunk Drivers and Babies survive accidents because they are all relaxed and just flop around, people break wrists and legs trying to brace themselves or by pushing on the brake pedal....
I'd love to see someone try to relax in the split second before an accident though.....

Was a short ar$e with stumpy legs back then = closer to steering wheel than I'd like to have been sometimes...Slightly different scenario but I was at an NYE party a few years ago when a drunk guy left the house and wandered into the main road
A maserati hit him at appx 60-70 mph, he never saw it coming
He was in hospital in a coma for a few days as his brain was swollen, but apart from that, no broken bones IIRC just heavy bruising, I remember people being very shocked at how little he was hurt
Apparently that was due to him not seeing it and not tensing up, if he had they reckon at least 2 broken legs and the rest

Despite my natural urges, floppy is the way to go...
I know it's more to do with momentum in Free Running/Parkour but you don't see many of those guys leaping off buildings and tensing up like a salmon jumping upstream when they land
Would make for a short video if they did...
"cool jump, but why is your spine sticking out of your skull?"
