I’m close to persuading the other half that we need a Rangie. This is a scratch I need to itch and she’s starting to agree, the snow helped my cause no end!

£30k appears to buy me a reasonable 56-57 motor with 40-50k miles and a good history (Range Rover or Range Rover Sport, there doesn’t seem too much difference). It has to be the V8, the output from the 2.7d in the Sport just won't wash.

Three questions:

1. Should I look at both (Big Boy an Sport) and keep options open, or is there a cast iron reason not to look at the Sport (apart from image, which I couldn’t give a toss about, I’m talking technical issues here people).

2. What kind of running costs should I expect? She currently runs an E90 330d M-Sport and each year we budget £1.2k for a couple of tyres and servicing. What size of premium should we expect on this?

3. Any major issues – gearbox, engine, suspension that I need to know about before buying?

Your real world experiences would be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest you only bother with the RR. The interior of the RRS is plasticky - it put me off. The TDV8 is a great engine and drives very well but £30k is pretty much the bottom end of the market for these so you will be limited on choice. I would say be prepared to buy privately to get a good one - I always prefer to meet the previous owner anyway (IMO it's worth almost as much as a warranty). Your maintenance budget might be a little light on average.

I have a TDV8 Sport
Its a superb car and as I always say just not something I ever thought Id drive!

The interior is the obvious comment on the pre facelift cars and a legitimate one
Im actually happy with how mine looks coming from BMW/MB - the long list of standard toys makes a refreshing change

I marginally preferred the Full Fat however Mission Control vetoed that and on the few occasions Im driving alone am grateful - the FF is nothing like as much fun to punt

Mine is a lovely place to be and despite comments on another thread is plenty big enough inside for us
You can get 1 or 2 child seats in the back with 1 other passenger but 3 in full toddler seats would be a struggle

Weve just returned from a 600 mile road trip this weekend with 2 adults, 2 middle sized kids, the proverbial labrador and luggage plus a decent stash of booze

I havent set my trip since the summer and its currently saying 24.3mph on average

Oh and in the snow it just rocks smile

have a 57 RR TDV8 VOGUE here, replaced a 56 plate RRS Td6 HSE

no comparison between the engines, the V8 is so much better

personally, I would only go with the FF RR now, its the only car I have had that is sure to be replaced like for like when the time comes. driving position is superb, comfort is excellent, space is brilliant and the general feel of the vehicle is better than its smaller stable mate

had this from 13 months old / 14k miles and it now has 48k on. Its had normal services (a £300 and a £400), a set of tyres (and is nearly ready for another set at £760 or so) and a set of rear brake pads. Now it is out of warranty, it will go to an independent rather than the RR stealer

Only fault was the front parking sensor system packed up - replaced no quibble on warranty.

being picky, I am not a fan of the satnav: it does work OK, but I prefer most of others I have seen to this one.

If you can find a vogue SE or autobiography in budget, they have a couple more toys than the VOGUE
