Well since forty years ago, just about everything was RWD, I'd imagine a large number of cars made then were pretty dire.

Funny how some people confuse the statement "I'll only buy RWD cars" with "RWD makes any car good"... This thread was no doubt started to prove that some crap RWD cars have existed and appease people who mistakenly think that. However, as Kambites eloquently points out, obviously some crap RWD cars have existed because up until a few decades ago, almost all cars were RWD!! biggrin

Volvo 340 GL

Woeful steering, cart springs, vague at speed (a heady 90mph if you're lucky) underpowered, crap interior, no handling to speak of... The list goes on.

And then we have to define what makes a car bad. And when people say "it handles badly!" we have to ask "what does handling badly mean?".

Yep, it's the old "how long is a piece of string" thing. We all want something different from a car and we all like different things as a driver. I like a car that communicates with me. My wife wants a car that insulates her from the road.

One horror of a RWD car illustrates this, the old Volvo 740/940 etc. As a tool for moving lots of stuff and people around they're brilliant. As a car for driving pleasure, they're horrific.

Morris Minor
Morris Marina
VW Beetle
Escort (expect the odd competition variant)
Cortina
Capri
Viva (except, maybe Firenza Droop Snoot)

etc etc

(so pretty much any mainstream 60's or 70's effort)
