Got to say RWD

However this is because everything since my first car has been RWD.

So given the choice of a Subaru Justy or a Ferrari F40, you'd be whipping out the Kleenex for the dog-eaters shopping car?
That wasnt the question was it?
At what point did the OP say would you prefer a Subaru Justy or a Ferrari F40.
Keep your stupid comments to yourself.rolleyes

Perhaps to rephrase that - would you rather the F40 was FWD or 4WD? wink I certainly wouldn't!

I prefer to drive a car that handles well, whether it is FWD, RWD, or 4WD.

We have 3 cars in the stable, 1 is RWD, 2 are FWD. All 3 are fun!
Having read most of the posts over the last few days and considered my own driving experiences on the road and on the track, I prefer to drive a RWD car that handles poorly because that is the most fun!

Yes, he said precisely that, "4WD anyday". 4WD is a type of drivetrain, not a type of car. I prefer blue cars to red cars, but that doesn't mean I'd choose a blue Metro over a red Pagani Zonda. biggrin

In a like for like situation he probably meant exactly that, he'd choose a 4wd Gallardo over the rwd Gallardo. The 4wd R8 over a 360 Ferrari anyday!

Why is it in all these discussion threads do people have to compare a crap car to a good one like you did? Completely pointless comment.

Quite. I can't understand how people can be so, well, for want of a better word, stupid! Look at my colour analogy for example. I know people that stick resolutely to one colour (like I do to RWD), so they'll say "all my cars have to be blue, I only like blue". But do some people honestly think that if that person was given the choice of a blue Subaru Justy or a red Ferrari 458 they'd chose the Justy because it's blue? That in no way infers that they feel any differently about blue vs red as a colour choice. Similarly, I'd chose a Megane 26R over some old 70s RWD saloon, but the FWD Megane would still wind me up, it's just that it wouldn't wind me up as much as a baggy old 70s thing on archaic suspension. That in no way infers that I somehow prefer FWD because I'd take a start of the art FWD chassis over a RWD but dog eared 1970s BL monstrosity.

Out of all of them.... Fwd... I know I'm in for a flaming there but just seem to prefer it.
Power oversteer is great fun at times yes but I just love a fast fwd car, the lack of purity, the steering on the throttle, just my preference.

It's not a completely pointless comment. If someone states categorically that they'd always take the 4WD option, then it's a valid comment, if a little tongue-in-cheek.

What drivetrain do most people prefer to drive in this day & age?

I enjoy rwd for fun & steering feel the most.
RWD does not mean you have good steering feel.

For the road a 4WD haldex system is probably best. FWD until you need the extra traction.

So you'd rather have a Nissan Micra than a Mclaren F1?! hehe Only kidding - there's nothing wrong with preferring FWD yesdriving

I tend to think that without drive to the wheels that steer it gives you more feel, its always been said what great steering feel most 911s have because its uncorrupted & left to what it should do.
I remember driving a renault 19 16v years ago & was blown away with how good the steering was,so its each to their own i suppose.

What I mean is if I was going to buy a car , a performance type car i would take 4wd over anything else as I believe in the UK its ideal when the weathers bad. You get better traction.
Of course your quite limited in whats available and generally they cost more in fuel, but some of the FWD stuff, like my Mini Cooper S JCW, and remapped Fabia VRS were terrible in the damp, wet, snow etc. I like driving RWD, as my M3 was and current 525, but in the recent weather they stayed on the drive.
Its just my personal choice, I would still prefer a Zonda to a Mitsubishi Shogun though.smile

in your dreams, Haldex is a bodge, used as it;s cheap and easy to integrate into an existing FWD setup.

if you notice, on proper cars, even VAG use Torsen III centre diffs for the Quattro A4/A5/A6/A8 etc.

most of the jap high end stuff uses RWD with a electronically controlled multi-plate clutch to the front or an electronically controlled centre diff.

Think i'm with you. I can only go on experience. I currently own a fast fwd hatch and a rwd roadster. i actually prefer driving the fwd fast. its just more exciting. I can feel the power through the wheel. Of course the rwd in the right hands would outhandle the fwd hatch. But what if you are not the "right hands" you just want what you prefer at the end of the day.

err... why is this a good thing?

most car designers will spend a month of Sundays trying to eliminate any 'torque steer' etc corrupting the steering.
