Hi all - bit of a 'what car?' that I think I've already answered, but I'd appreciate input or views on.

I'm after a a fast (sub 6 secs to 60 ideally), understated, four-seat, four wheel drive, petrol-engined car with a bit of practicality thrown in.

Basically, with a budget around the £13k mark, I think i'm looking at a B6 S4.

Any thoughts?

To add, mpg is not a major factor, as I only do around 7k miles per year.

A Mazda 6 MPS fits your requirements perfectly except it will leave with a fair bit of change.

I flirted with the idea of one of these, but have heard a few horror stories in terms of running costs.

(cars lunching gearboxes on a regular basis seems to ring a bell...)

Would it make you feel better to hear some S4 horror stories? smile

all good options otherwise!

I am still thinking about a Jag S-Type R, but I think I want to get back into a manual car after 18 months with an auto...

I have heard about clutch issues, but if you've got other info, I'm all ears.

With your specific requriements I guess the S4 V8 is the only option out there unless you go down the line of Evo's and Scooby.

I've hankered over the S4 for a while, it won't blow your brains on the twisty stuff but has plenty to offer in terms of grunt. Peach of an engine that sounds fab with upgraded exhaust. On top of this you get a lovely high spec and well laid out interior with loads of toys to play with. Servicing and insurance is pretty reasonable too, for me it is half the price of an E46 M3 (other hankering effort) to insure. MPG you get low 20's but then again I get low 20s in my A4 V6 cab.

My Dad bought one new in 2005, They really are not as big as you think. Quite tight in the back. RS4 was even worse.
Subaru is probably your other option.

It might be worth researching the 4WD systems that the various cars have. I don't know much about this area, but someone posted a video recently of a test where they put various 4WD cars on a ramp and removed/reduced traction from one end, and most wouldn't climb the ramp, and just sat spinning the traction reduced wheels instead.

My Dad has an X type Jag 3.0 sport now and that does exactly that.

And a 6 MPS won't do 60 in under 6 seconds, which was one of the OP's requirements.
Actually it wasn't, it was an "ideally" rather than a hard requirement.
