Hi all. Right I am selling a car on eBay which was bought by a chap with no feedback from Kenya 36 hours ago. I have heard from him once about 10 minutes after the auction ended saying he was arranging for somebody to collect and ship, but no more information.

I sent him an e-mail last night asking for a deposit or at least an update and have just sent him an e-mail saying if i don't hear from him by the end of the day I am selling it to somebody else...

I specifically said in the ad "to be paid for and collected within 3 days".

What do I do, should I follow through with the threat and sell to the next bidder tomorrow, am i within my rights to do this?

Thanks
jimbob

This is definitely a scam, have had a similar experience a few years ago with a Gumtree advert, people from Kenya/Nigeria would email saying they have contacts who will arrange shipping, will I take PayPal etc.

Do not part with the car as you will not get any money!

I would make a second chance offer to the next highest bidder.

Give him the three days that you have contractually agreed and then, once his time's up, send him an e-mail to tell him he is in breach and that you're selling it to someone else.

If you made it clear in the ad that he has 3 days, and if you've reiterated it subsequently by email, then you can walk away with a clear conscience.

You really are new to the internet, aren't you?

This has been a scam since before the internet was invented.

It'll be a scam mate

The car wont actually go anywhere, he will just ask you to lend him £100 or so towards the shipping fee's which of course he will return to you with interest wink ... not.

I appreciate that came across as incredibly stupid. But other than me actually giving him bank details/money/car I don't see how he can get a penny off of me.

Like I said, that car is going nowhere without cash in my hand...

Most common is the "shipper/agent" will send you a cheque/draft for the full amount, plus extra. The guy will ask you to wire the difference back to him, plus keeping a bit for being so nice. The cheque/draft will be stolen or a forgery. I recall the cheque rules were changed recently though, and after six days the money is yours even if it was forged or stolen, and you were not a party to it.

Another one is that you will be paid from a stolen paypal or bank account, the difference to be wired back again (or western union).

However, it is common for vehicles to be shipped to west Africa, they are RHD, so some requests will be genuine, and AFAIK an international wire can't be reversed.

The cash will be in your bank account, the car may be collected, as said before they will probably transfer too much and ask you to send the difference back, and/or pay for collection & shipping of your own vehicle, then the money will be taken back off you by paypal chargeback or because the bank transfer was fraudulent. This can happen weeks or even months later if the banks are following a paper trail.

Despite what they claim Paypal don't give a flying fk about fraud as long as they get to make a profit, and the banks will quite rightly recover fraudulent transfers but have no interest in money you transferred on or your missing car.
