Seems to be a few other car and baby threads around, must be that time of year!

2 new arrivals in 2011, boolay jnr and I think it's also about time for a change of car.

I have had a family friendly 9-5 Aero for two and a half years, albeit without the family silly and had it in my head that it would be a clear cut change to an E60 525/530 or possibly an A6 3.2/2.7TDi (Dynamically not a great car, but I do have a soft spot for these).

Taking the 4 door concept to the extreme, I have had thoughts of an RX8. Not the first thing which comes to mind when tinking of a practical car hence my post... How practical are they?

I have never been in one but from the pictures I have seen, access to the rear looks pretty good due to the missing pillar and suicide doors. Is the rear access good, or is really a PITA?

I'm guessing the boot isn't going to be that good, however? Will it swallow a pushchair and associated paraphernalia, or am I dreaming?

Any real like experience would be appreciated

I've not tried to put a baby in one, but they're certainly pretty spacious for a coupe. I'd guess that the strange doors and lack of a B-pillar would make access to forward facing baby seats easier than most cars, but make rear facing ones a pain.

I knew a family with an rx8 and they said that the way the rear doors opened was ideal for a sprog, and the boot used to swallow their pushchair with no problem, although I guess it depends what pushchair you buy!

Only thing I'd be wary of is the running costs due to rising fuel prices, the 8 drinks the fuel!!

Access to the rear is very easy, just be aware that in a car park you need a bit more space than you'd think to be able to open both doors properly otherwise you end up squeezing between them, it has isofix for the car seats. As far as a pushchair goes I don't know as the kids I had in mine were borrowed so we didn't have all that crap, the boot is fairly long but if I was you I would take the pushchair along when you testdrive one.

Interested in this too, as per my babies thread!

The RX8 is ridiculously cheap now - I know you need to be able to handle the fuel bills but I am now seeing early models (with the lower VED) going for sub £5k!

We've quite a few customers who have kids/babies with RX8s and as above because of the doors make it easier than other vehicles.

Fuel consumption is a slight concern, as well as oil so i've read! I guess puchase prices reflect this.

Interesting statements about the good rear access, could make a strong case to the mrs!

Oil consumption doesn't make much difference. Something like a litre every thousand miles, I think, and it runs on cheap mineral oil, so about five pounds a litre.
