Put his Mum and Dad on the policy as named drivers, this should reduce the premium somewhat. It might also be worth considering a different car. You haven't stated what car you're getting quotes for, but if it's a Corsa, 106, Saxo etc, you will find these expensive due to the fact that so many 17/18 years olds have them and crash them. Try a car that isn't popular with 17/18 years olds.

Use www.parkers.co.uk and search the insurance groups (remembering that its now up to group 50!)
also try a suicide sled (caterham/westfield) for outrageously cheap insurance.

You could go for classic insurance although most won't offer policies to anyone under 21. It might be possible to add him as a named driver on a classic policy though, so long as an older driver is the main owner/driver and could 'give' the car to him when he's old enough to insure it as the owner.

In order to qualify for that, generally speaking the car needs to be over 15 years old. For reliability at this age, look for German, Swedish or Japanese cars.

Normally-aspirated Saabs and Volvos seem to be fairly cheap to insure for what they are.

TC, nice thinking, but I don't think classic insurance allows you to build NCD?

Not all of them, although I've found the notion of NCD something of a mixed blessing - makes little to no difference to my premium.

Old 80's stuff tends to be cheap to insure (Astras/Escorts/etc), although not brilliant on the safety front if that's an issue. I'm insured with co-op, although second year admiral tend to be the cheapest.

100% this, I am 31 and was trying some quotes before shopping for a cheap car. 1.3 Fiestas, 1.1 106/saxo, micras, puntos etc were silly money to insure when compared to larger/better cars. Also try something that is old enough to be considered a classic.

Why should it be an issue? People drove them for years and managed not to die, we now have an obsession with safety systems when most accidents could be avoided if people were more concerned with driving properly then it wouldn't matter how safe our cars were because there would be very few acccidents.

A lot of it is done on statistics, and if people follow them like sheep into the biggest 'pen', that'll be the one most 'profited' from.

Put it this way, part of an insurer's statistics will say young person + Ford Fiesta = likely accident x10000s.

He runs the same profile through his probability/lie-o-meter. Young person + Saab 90 = no record of one being crashed by an over-enthusiastic 18-year-old at all.

Pretty much what I thought, from the quotes I did via confused the lowest prices for a 996 C2 and (£700) Fiat Punto were; £482 and £845 respectively.

Just having a look and doing various quotes for a 17 year old, male, In an IP12 postcode,5000 miles, fully comp, car kept on a drive, 250 excess, with no additional drivers.

I know I'm in a different area to the OP, but this was just for comparison sake.

These were all through a comparison site.

Citroen Saxo 1.1 - £800 car. £4071 for the year.

Ford Mondeo 2.0 TDI - £1200 car. - £3954 for the year

Daewoo Matiz 0.8 - £1000 car - £3939 for the year

Skoda Fabia 1.2 Sport - £2200 car - £2509 for the year

Volvo 340 1.4- £400 car - £2677 for the year

Yep have just had this issue with my son on a 1.2 clio and a 1.5 civic. It makes no difference to the premium at all (within reason) to the car as the “risk” is not the car it is the driver. Alas all the young dudes have been tarred with the Max Power brush.

I was advised by one of my old boys mates to buy him an old landrover and insure it via NFU. Did not see that as being a workable solution.

So he is a named driver on mum’s car now. which cramps his style but, hey ho.
