I hadnt played GT since Gt3 first came out so when I borrowed GT 5 and a PS3 for a week (last week) I was really let by by how little things seemed to have progressed. Also using a control pad to steer it just does not behave like a car would, is it any better with a steering wheel?

I only got to level 11 / licence semi pro (?) but was left thinking it was not much of a step forward.

yes, much better with a wheel. Otherwise once you have powerful cars, you need traction control if using the control pad, but that is no fun. Wheel and pedals is lots of fun, and quite realistic. Can people not forget: 1) most road cars do sound dull, even with a big exhaust; 2) rear drive cars don't snap sideways on the road all the time because you are not provoking them or thrashing the hell out of them, I think most people on GT5 will be pushing 10/10ths straight away. I drove a race prep'd MX5 in a scholarship and after a few laps building up I span with oversteer, so it does happen when you get on track and 'step on it'. For what it is worth I think it is realistic in terms of steering and throttle input and I think someone who is a good driver on the road could translate it to gt5 very quickly with a wheel and pedals (ie the same tools they are used to). Likewise people who are quick on gt5 can probably pedal a real car quickly too.

I can only speak for GT4 and previous versions, but they're better, but there are still things that just aren't quite right. I find it very confusing to try and drive Gran Turismo to be honest, as the cars respond differently to how they do in my other experience, which is real life and PC sims. For example, in GT I often have trouble driving in a drift to slight oversteer, because frequently the car runs away from me and becomes uncatchable. I remember a sim racing friend of mine trying an Impreza on GT4 on a tarmac rally stage round at a friend's house, and he went into the first bend in a beautiful drift with a tad of opposite lock - then suddenly he went "'ang on!" and it just got worse and worse until he spun, and he couldn't catch it - strange. I had the same experience trying an Elise at the ring, which is a car and track I've tried two or three times in real life, and it just didn't drive as it should - I think I spun in the first sequence of bends! The effects of weight transfer don't seem quite right as well. I'm sticking to PC sims, but I will try GT5 when I get the chance.

And then you play both and realise the difference between a game and state of the art simulation. For a few quid on a TV GT5 is super, for as real as it gets it's miles off.
Regarding the second video, the realism of the tracks in iRacing really is phenomenal. I know Brands in real life really well, and the iRacing version is the only version I've ever played in a sim which gets it right, but not only that, it's absolutely bang on in every detail. Extremely impressive. The physics is pretty good too - probably the best I've tried.
It's the best around today. rFactor is good, but patchy due to its nature, iRacing is high quality across the whole range if somewhat car limited and US biased, though improving. Not cheap though.
iRacing have simulated track surface mapping though don't they!?

From what I have read and seen it's maybe a 5cm density grid with accurate topography within some silly accuracy over the whole surface using laser height mapping. Which means every bump and everything, even down to the subtle 'noise' of the surface is accurate around the whole track.

They are certainly dedicated to making sure your experience of a given track is perfect!

yes So far as I know each track costs a silly amount to model as they literally scan ever centimetre of it. I can only vouch for Brands (which I had to buy for about £15! All the standard tracks are American), but it is fantastically accurate. iRacing are often criticised for being too profit hungry (something I agree with), but on the other hand they are doing a huge service to the sim world by getting tracks mapped like that (mind you, it's not as if it's open for them to be used in other sims at all). It's a shame they get small details wrong, like the height you sit at in the cars, and the tyre model seems odd at times. I even e-mailed them about the seat height but just got fobbed off. Nobody sits in a single seater with the steering wheel in their lap and a clear view of all of the front wheels and tyres!

I am glad there is some realism when it comes to GT5 in this thread. I bought it and sold it the next day. It doesn't even begin to compare to 5+ year old PC Sims (I play GTL).

Ignoring the handling, the sounds on the non-premium cars a a joke, and even the good ones aren't that good.

Glad you gave it a chance.

Oh, and there is no difference between premium sounds and standard. If you couldn;t be bothered to try the game out for more than a day, you wouldn;t have got to some of the good sounding cars. Most of the early ones sound like hairdryers in GT5, because, funnily enough, the cars they are modelled on sound like hairdryers too (anythign with 4 cylinders basically).

However if you put a fruity exhaust on them, they start to sound much better. Which almost sounds like real life again?

I've played Forza 3 and GT5 extensively now and GT5 is by far the better game.

If you only give a game 1 day to impress you then you're going to miss out on some amazing stuff. I remember being the same and selling stuff within 24 hours. I went back to those games 6-12 months later and realised how good they were and couldn't understand why I sold them.

I've only had about 30 minutes experience on GT5 so I can't really comment, but that video is extremely impressive! I am an X-Box guy and so Forza 3 is my game which I thought was very realistic, but I think GT5 is more so! I do love Forza though, the way the cars sound / handle is very true to life.
