Such a shame, 4 Pot turbos are mostly dull in comparison but cant really argue with the logic when there is so much focus on emmissions and economy.

Is this the change that they talked about in Evo, where the big V8s become smaller sixes, the sixes become turbocharged fours and so on? Maybe they were right and it's time to buy that V8 that you want NOW before it's too late!

Well I read that N/A six is on its way out...the 3.0T stays...

So no more N/A's in the lineup? Oh dear...

That X1 in the article is even more ugly in that maroon colour.

Turbo makes sense, the 2 litre has more torque than the 3 litre x25 units.

I'm also reading that the cars with this engine will be badged "28i", so the hallowed 328i badge is back in the example of the 3 series.

Correct, posted about it in the BMW section - http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

The badging keeps getting more confusing!

Certainly do, although it may possibly be a 'technically' better engine ......you cant beat straight 6's engine/exhaust note.

Well the 16i, 18i, 20i and 6-cylinder 23i should stay and they are all N/A.

Pleased to see the straight 6 isn't going completely - would have been a bit of a problem for Morgan having announced it's going into the EvaGT

Out of interest, why is the "x28i" considered hallowed?

But in fairness, given nobody has driven it, the 2.0T could be better. It won't sound as nice obviously but if the performance, power delivery and economy is improved you can't really go wrong.

This is such a shame. The (N52?) is such a lovely thing to use. Even ignoring the noise for a moment, I don't think any 4pot will feel as sweet through the controls and respond so consistently across the rev range. Think I'll keep my 130i thanks BMW.

The 2.0T figures are pretty good though. I think in the 528i with a Spanish gearbox would make a good sports saloon.

As opposed to Autocar giving it the thumbs up in last week's EVO?
