Out of interest, why is the "x28i" considered hallowed?
It was a lovely little post-war car with a great engine that Bristol also used under licence if I recall correctly

The figures for that engine in the 328i are seriously impressive for a petrol

245bhp - 5.9secs to 60 - 155mph top speed, yet achieving 149g/ km co2 and average mpg of 44.

Only a couple of years ago we where applauding BMW for getting those sort of figures out of the 330d, so to get near enough the same from a 2.0 petrol is a very good effort.

As much as you'd miss the 6-cylinder soundtrack, new engines like this are definitely the way forward

This is a real shame. But most manufacturers seem to be going in this direction. It's a peach of an engine too. One of the main reasons I even bought a Z4.

It makes me sad but I guess the 3.0i has had it's day?

Big numbers can be extracted from a 2.0 - look at Evos for example; but they will always lack the effortless punch of a good six pot.

But it won't average 44 though will it, do you seriously believe it will? If you do, then you must also believe the outgoing 330i averages 39.5mpg (or something like that), because the 'figures' say so. A difference of 4.5mpg at best then in exchange for the loss of the 6cyl soundtrack, whoopee!

Agreed - take BMW figures with a bucketload of salt.

Our 335d is meant to be 40ish mpg. We rarely get above 32.

The official MPG figures are comparable, they haven't changed the way its measured. The CO2 also makes quite a difference for RFL and company car tax. They've come close to making the ultimate all round car with the F30 328i IMO.
