Trying to get it all cleaned up, the surface itself i've managed to clean most of it using light pressure on a sponge/scourer.

In terms of the valves, im picking all the hard carbon off with a small flat screwdriver.

What about the part (dont know the name sorry) next to the valves. Its curved obviously so getting to it is a bit of a nightmare.

Which bits do and dont need cleaning before refitting/pressure testing?

Need to get some very fine emery paper for the rest of the head, but any ideas would be appreciated.

Dishwashers good if SHMBO doesn't catch you.

+1 for the dishwasher ..... I would also advise a top secret mission be attempted at Midnight to avoid being shouted at hehe

Electric drill with various shapes and sizes of wire brush used to be the diy weapon of choice.

Also check the valve seats and do a gentle lapping to ensure gas-tight.

Don't be silly WD40 is only for cleaning brake discs.

Why not ask your local garage/machinist if you can use their parts washer?

The problem with posts like this is that someone, somewhere, is now cracking out the WD40 hehe

Soak the cylinder head in diesel overnight, then use a brush or scourer to loosen the carbon deposits.

That's a proper big old head

Just out of interest, what's it off?

Wire brush on an electric drill (use a Dremmel for the hard to reach areas).

As has been said, soak the head in parafin or diesel overnight if you can.

Oh, and DON'T use the dishwasher... she wasn't too pleased with me. wink

I don't know, tbh. A friend of mine does vapour and bead blasting and that's just a pic of a head he was practicing on.

Is it worth cleaning the carbon of the piston heads (see what i did there?) or just leaving it?

Parts cleaner (kerosene stuff) to degrease and get any oil and coolant off
Scrape down the surface with stanley knife blade to get rid of old gasket, making sure not to scratch the head
1200 grit sandpaper used lightly to get any more deposits off.
Blow out the holes
Vapour blast

Good as new

For the valves, best way is to remove them and put them through a wire wheel.
