I went to a Plant / Commercial auction at the weekend.

Most of the lots were diggers etc so I thought it was worth dropping in as the few cars / vans might therefore be cheap.

Unlike a normal car auction, the auction moved around the yard so generally the cars weren't even started up and no paperwork was on show (although you could enquire about specific lots) and everything was 'sold as seen'

So explain these:

Touareg 2007 3.0 diesel 163,000 miles £15,000
Passat 2.0 TDi 2006 90,000 needing £800 of paintwork £4200
Passat 2008 2.0TDi Est highline 67,000 £11,200

Now I don't have trade guide these days but looking on the A Trader I could have bought comparable cars far cheaper and had a test drive etc first !

Thats strange, i went to measham on friday to look at a few grand picasso's that were going through, thinking i could potentially pick one up for 6k. Was i wrong, the cheapest a 70k 07 plate diesel went for 7200 inc fees and i could buy that car on a trader for 6500! i can only asume that the cars were being brought by citroen dealers who could then knock them out for top end as can't see any money in them otherwise.

Weekend auctions are always unpredictable. People get blinded by the fact that it's at auction so it will be a bargain. I've seen plenty of cars go through weekend auctions for way too much cash

You'll probably find that if you go back again the same vehicles etc will still be there as the auctioneer was bidding up to the wall. Chased a few cars at auction and after a few times through they actually sell for a more realistic price.

Just out of interest, does anyone have some tried and tested decent names/links for plant auctions for the South East?

I'm looking at getting a JCB 803 or JCB 3CX Sitemaster for private/garden use and really want to try to get a more modern machine for cheaper than the ebay stuff...

Maybe the cars were known to be ex-rep mobiles so they were known to have just one owner, good maintenance and nothing but motorway miles on them.

That's the only sensible answer I can think if, except the buyers not being aware of the market price of the car, being caught up in a spontaneous purchase or having enough cash to go for convenience over cost.

I-Bidder is your friend as is EuroAuctions if your bidding blind (via the net).

The Hewden Auction is on the 12th October, expect mainly CAT stuff though, this is usually one of the biggest and where the traders seem to bulk up on stock. Definitely worth a visit!

Thimbleby & Shortland sell a lot of stuff (excavators not so much 3cx's) out of Reading market & around the country, may be worth registering with them they send regular newsletters via email.

Just re-read your initial post.

The price of plant & machinery on ebay is ridiculous, I watched the Cheffins auction via Ibidder yesterday and Tractors that were going for £5k are up for almost double on ebay, it seems ebay is more for the private buyers with a little more money than sense.

Some bargains can be had in the magazines too, Resale weekly (as mentioned, but doesnt show many prices), Truck Trader & the Farm Trader all have the occasional bargain. Also keep an eye in the AdTrader (think I have found a corking item this morning actually)& GumTree.

If your new to buying this kind of equipment, take someone who knows about it or feel free to email me and id be happy to tell you what to look for explain the jargon etc smile

It depends...

I bought a 94 Manitou with good tyres, forks and bucket for £6500 (no vat) from Ebay. The main reason I didn't go to an auction was because I'm not VAT reg. and that 20% makes a big difference.

To get similar from a dealer would be circa £8,000 (+VAT) and all the ones I saw had bald tyres.

Slightly more specialist, I was referring more to anything that could dig or carry. 3cx, Excavators & Dumpers are very popular on self build projects. Tractors (usually under 110hp) on there are popular amongst small holders with limited knowledge where else to acquire them from.

Agreed with private purchases, the VAT can make auctions unbeneficial.

I'm self building wink I thought a Telehandler would be more useful.

I think I'll only need a Digger for 3 days whilst a Telehandler is handy from brickwork until plaster.
