I hear you mate. I'll be showing this (and other suggestions) to the indie when I take the car round to them.

Thing is, I've not even seen the car yet, and can't really get an appreciation of it all until it's in front of me frown Besides, I rely on you guys for mechanical input smile

I did however (once) manage to -

1. Change a water pump on an Opel Kadett (not Oliver smile)
2. Changes the pads on a 2.0 Cav
3. Replace the battery on a Chimaera (using a tractor battery!).
4. Um.......... that's about it.

Ah biggrin Chances are the fastener that has come adrift is a rivnut or a derivative thereof as you can't thread plate.

To be honest as a reasonable compromise I would settle for a second hand bonnet fitted by an indy and paid for by the company. But if they are willing to claim on their insurance then new bonnet fitted at good indy/main dealer.

If theyre rubber rivenuts theyre awful things, within 5 minutes the brass insert corrodes onto the bolt and only comes undone if you can break the rubber. However if theres no other way...
Or try for captive nuts

Oh no you can't... What thickness of sheet and what thread would you like? wink

Let's say it's 22 gauge plate (roughly 0.75mm).

M8 x 1.25, not a bloomin chance biggrin

M6 x 1? Nah.

M5 x .8? We've not even got a single turn on the tap as yet....

Ooh look, M4 x 0.7... Now you're talking, you've actually got whole turn on the tap now biggrin

Yes, theoretically you *can* but for the thread sizes we're talking here you never would wink

not tapped in the conventional way, the sheet can be pushed through and a thread applied to the "pushed through" section of the sheet .i have some brackets that are threaded in exactly this method .the fixing brackets for fairing panels on a lot of bikes are made like this .

I'm a fitter by trade, I know what can and can't be done biggrin Sure, you can do all sorts with metal but in this particular case you couldn't tap it.

To be fair you may need to cut that bolt down a bit, that's 5 minutes chargeable work right there. May just as well pop a brand new bonnet on, of almost the same colour.
