I though I was the only one 'who knew' that these big 4x4's can actually motor. (I once 'lost' a mate in his Griffith who was following me in my Range Rover to LeMons. hehe)

sorry to any big fans of these cars, dont get me wrong i know they are fast and capable cars. Its just the styling that offends me and the fact that so many are driven by people who just buy them as a status symbol.

However I do fully accept some will bought by people who appreciate the abilities of the vehicle (although they might be the tiny minority) not how rich it makes you look when you drive down to Ikea..

SPOT ON!!

you could take it to the ring and meet up fitty cent, puff daddy, some drug dealers, some 20 years olds who have hired one for a wedding etc etc, or you could buy proper RR and have a proper sports car..

sorry i for one thing these things are utterly vulgar and appeal to footballer types, orange women and people who wear too much gold!
or you could take a gold 77 trans-am and meet a bunch of line dancing big moustached Burt Reynolds impersonators with flared jeans and cowboy boots.

Pistonheads - Stereotyping matters.

What performance or prestige car doesn;t suffer from the same? The RRS is just a convenient place for small minded people to direct their prejudices - especially greens who zone in on city 4x4's even when they're parked next to saloons and estates that guzzle as much if not more fuel. You've been brainwashed. (Although I agree some RRS owners are a tad 'rusty' in hue.)

Either spend time shopping at Ikea, or spend time trying to look wealthy, but you cannot do both. HTH

That's hilarious and impressive at the same time. Your OH seems quite relaxed. V funny to see you motoring past all the normal cars and then mullering the following corners.....

RR's have always been a prestige product bought by the landed gentry, the whole idea was to have a off road rolls. They are huge status symbols in many countries outside the UK.

the only people who shop in Ikea are the ones who bought their RRS on a zero deposit PCP or remortgage and can't afford the fuel bills so it spends most of its life sat outside their Northern Rock 120% self cert funded 5 bedroom executive new build.

Living in a Rural community the RRS is a perfect estate car for those that don't want the sheer bulk of a FFRS. speaking personally I like the RR but I can't get one in my work carpark so have to make do with a RRS. I was going to be all properly bling and have a G55 AMG like what Megan Fox has but being LHD i would miss the ability to stick 2 fingers up at passing peasants as I run their poxy little welfare cars orf the road en-route to collect another Billy bookcase to put my collection of "Property Developer For Chavs" picturebooks before i go for a spot of illegal immigrant shooting at the country club with Guy Ritchie and his Biatche Madge.

Its great to be posh and take the rangey to Waitrose, not like those filthy commoners next door in hertfordshire what can only afford to drive Cayennes down to tescos. PIKEYS!

Not me or my car - see the culprit earlier - although my OH put up with similar.

This's my (old) rangie and it was a long way from being last of cour convoy to the Le Mans campsite that year:

(It's parked on the outside of our site because, logically, it was nomiated most suitable for the beer & BBQ fodder raid on the supermarche.)

A couple of years ago I saw a RRS being driven by one of the testing team before a tourist day at the 'Ring. You could hear him coming from half a lap away due to the punishment he was putting the tyres through.
He was dipping below ten minutes per lap from what we could tell from watching at Brundchen and waiting for him to come through again.
And he wasn't even trying. He had one arm up on the sill, trucker style through the whole complex. I have a lot of respect for his skill it has to be said.

yes very funny, but a 77 Trans Am is an iconic car and a good one is an appreciating classic that is very sought after. But one thing thats very clear about something like a 70's muscle car is that its not a confused car, its all about fun..

A RR Sport is not ideal as a family car, not a muscle car, not a sports car, not the best of offroaders (especially with 22 inch Kahn rims added!) so what is it? I will tell you, something for people who just want to show off! As a car a proper RR does everything better, if you want to go fast buy a fast car! Each to their own, I just dont like the things at all! they remind me of the hideous Escalade thing in the US.

Give me a full size proper RR or a Discovery any day.. and people will wont mistake me for Rio Ferdinand or Dale Winton! wink

Using your theory here, a Porsche 911 C4 isn't a proper sports car, it isn't a decent 4x4, it isn't a family car, it certainly isn't a muscle car, so what is it? It's for people who want to show off. rolleyes

a 911 C4S that does over 170 mph and 0-60 in under 5 secs is NOT a sports car? Ok well i stand corrected. I guess a lofty 10 tonne 4x4 is a better bet as a sports car? hmmmm why are people so sensitive about image related cars like RR Sports? (maybe something to do with deep routed insecurities that may also directly influence one to make such an image focused purchase) healthy debate thats all it is, going through someones previous car list and pointing fingers is a tad crass.. I dont expect everyone to agree with what I like.. just giving an opinion.. smile

I can't see what all the fuss is about - I've just got a new RRS HSE and it does everything I want it to extremely well - its replaced a 5 year old LR Disco II (my second Disco)and its better in every respect from what I can see so far and I'm very happy with it.

I looked hard at the new Disco LR4 but I just couldn't get on with the styling, the RRS is built on the same chassis and IMO (granted its just me)I think it looks great in comparison, and the interior is way ahead, a really luxurious place to be - the FFRR was just too big for what I needed and so the Sport seemed like a good way to go, simple as that, and I'm not orange and I don't play football either (but I do occasionally go to IKEA).

Anyway, Dan's article puts the RRS into a more balanced perspective than the stereotype, which is good to see - thanks.

Nice article

Over the last 2y my TDV8 RR Sport has:

been supremely comfortable transport for a family of 4 and a dog
kept us mobile through all of the snow even when when it was 2ft high on our drive
made a mockery of the local farm tracks
been able to tow 3 tonnes without sweating
done 1000 miles in one hit twice without issue stopping only for fuel and bodily functions
and finally is a lot of fun for when Im on my own behind the wheel

Some cars do some of the above
Not many tick all the boxes

Cheers!!

Every car/model/owner seems to have a stereotype on PH. It does seem to be a victim of its own success though.

For those who've never owned/driven one, it really is a very capable all round vehicle, as that video of me destroying a set of tyres on the ring shows.
Saw that video a year ago and though it was good.

How were your brakes after that lap, pretty shagged id guess. Did you manage many laps in it?

I find the ring really gives a heavy car a hammering

Thats why it is used for vehicle testing tongue out

If anyone gets the chance, I would strongly recommend taking a RRS out for a drive. Really impressive pieces of kit. 0-100-0mph is just ridiculous!

My LR dealer loaned my an identical vehicle whilst my trusty van (a.k.a the Discovery) was in for a service last year.

That new 3.0TDV6 is an impressive step forward compared to the old 2.7, which itself IMHO is a belting good motor, certainly way more refined than the AUdi 3.0 I had in a recent A6.

29mpg isn't great though - my Disco (which is slightly heaver than the RRS) can equal that with the 'old' engine - I'm guessing speed limits weren't adhered to? biggrin

I have to say though, if I could, a TDV8 RRS would be the thing I'd have. Maybe it's because, having owned a P38 4.6 Vogue RR my idea of what makes a RR is skewed, but refined as the new 3.0 is, it can't match the noise of the V8 diesel.
I recently tested both a 3.0 SDV6 RRS and a '11MY 4.4TDV8 RR and to be honest the 4.4 is significantly better (both on and off-road) and with the 8 speed box is just another step up. The LR Experience guy said that LR won't be fitting the 4.4TDV8 into the RRS to ensure that the full fat RR stays the best. Still that supercharged 5 litre was tugging...

3 Laps, although it towed the M3 out last Easter and managed a quick lap again.

The brakes are huge and with decent fluid, have no problems - pads are cheap for the size of them too.

Perhaps this will stop people thinking of them as some lumbering old farm vehicle?
