Wasn't the last Lotus world champion Andretti in the 70's? It's a bit like Torres signing for Championship winning Tottenham because they won the league in the 60's.

Sorry Spurs fans, just an example. How much of that World Championship winning know how is still left at Lotus?
Yes...but, the team he has joined, forgetting the name of it, is the team that took Alonso to victory in the early 90s.

Cant we just look forward to some decent racing and hope that this year will be as good as the last. Who cares who is sponsering who and what the actual politically correct names of the teams are, if all the cars had no sponsership and the teams were called team1 and team2 etc the racing would still be just as good!

I stand gratefully corrected on team names, but wasn't Alonso 2005 + 6?

Don't want to shoot you down, but Teams, staff and associated businesses will care about sponsorship. Manufacturers spending countless millions will care about the names and without the two the racing wouldn't exist.

To conclude, Renault has no stake, investment or direct involvement with the team other than engine supply. If you want to be a pedant, call it Genii.

Oh and 1Malaysia are not Lotus, never will be Lotus, have nothing to do with Lotus, don't have the support of Chapmans family and race under Malaysian colours. Yah boo sucks TF fans.
Point A. Renault build and supply engines, they also supply engineers IIRC, Group Lotus supply nothing but a name and badge on the front of the car that is it, they don't own any of the team either they are just a sponsor, they aren't supplying anything.

1Malaysia own the Team Lotus name, like Mercedes own the Mercedes name they bought Brawn and changed the name to Mercedes as they own the name and can do it, like Ron Dennis owns the Mclaren name, they have every right to use that name, the Chapman family can go fk a duck as far as I am concerned, Colin was a great man but it is clear the Chapman family are in it for money and not racing, Tony Fernandes is keeping true to what Colin Chapman set up, a race team dedicated to Formula 1, dedicated to British history of F1, Dedicated to the F1 fans and the racing.

Genii, Renault, Group Lotus what ever the hell they are, are not Team Lotus, they aren't interested in the fans, quite clear they are interested in publicity, dragging people through the mud and money, as far as an F1 team go I rank their attitude and presence with HRT now as they are making a complete mockery out of Colin Chapman, Team Lotus fans and F1 fans, by all means Group Lotus sponsor Renault but you are not the original Lotus F1 team, you have nothing to do with the original F1 team, stop try to pass yourself off as the original F1 team, near enough false advertising.

Danny Bahar just needs to shut the fk up as does Bouiller, you are Group Lotus not Team Lotus fk off with your petty wah wah wah we are the original Lotus st, you aren't! You are Renault, you are sponsored by a company who owns the name Group Lotus, Group Lotus make road cars, and in the past year or so have really tainted the Lotus brand with this st and the awful looking Europa (admittedly the original Europa was no looker) but you are just playing on the past of two companies and one of those you have nothing to do with bar the word Lotus.

Apologies you're completely right - I was thinking Schumacher in the 90s and Alonso in the 00s -though I'd not have guessed it was 2005/6 !

Neither car is a "Lotus", Lotus do not make F1 cars. One is a "Team Lotus" and one is a "Lotus Renault".

No one has mentioned that RenaultLotus and Lotus are both running Renault engines and gearboxes?

Same name, same engine, different drivers, which "Team" will be faster?

Fair enough but for me F1 has moved on, the driver is only a test/reserve or whatever they call him these days and the car is only liveried out in black, red & gold in a attempt to gain some publicity. I don't care for brands because my interest is in cars and although I agree Colin Chapman's Lotus cars were important I would suggest Ferrari and McLaren are equally as important. And... I am actually interested in watching the 5 (is it five?) world champions racing at the front this year, it will be a great season but Bruno testing a Renault doesn't stir me.

Team Lotus are running the Red Bull gearbox which is different to the renault one but only works with the renault engine (hence the deal with renault was key to Team Lotus after they got the rights to the Red Bull package).

If the enstone based team have sorted out their trick exhaust, then they will. (Dunno if anyone has seen this yet - it exhausts out of the front of the sidepods, to feed the whole of the underfloor of the car).

No, I'm not making this up....

C

ETA: linkie to ScarbsF1's page (techie F1 anorak dude) http://scarbsf1.wordpress.com/2011/02/01/renault-r...

and a photo of the item in question - look for a sodding great oval shaped vent in the middle of the photo. That's the exhaust, exiting forward of the sidepod.

I swear this whole Lotus F1 thing is like the perfect storm for Pistonheads, it contains virtually everything that's argued about on here.

British car manufacturers, foreign owners and management, politics, pedantry, semantics, formula one, rose tinted nostalgia, Lotus itself, fk me the only thing that's missing is Gordon Brown.

Why can't people be sensible about it? To think either side is innocent is pretty naive if you ask me.

The fact is that all three entities are british based teams employing mostly british people, and it's just a brand name that's being disputed.

Why not just pick who you want to support and get on with your life rather than preaching to everyone else about the fact that you know that one or other is the real Lotus because ones 300 meters closer to Ketteringham or Dave Hunt says so or I think Tony Fernandes is a nicer chap than that nasty Danny Bahar and anyone else that disagrees is an idiot because I'm always right.

A bit of pragmatism wont kill you.

I swear the bigotry and ignorance spouted about this topic makes PH look like some sort of pathetic football supporters forum bickering over Liverpool versus Everton or some crap.
