do a search on 106 owners, rallye register, saxp etc.

I have the Peugeot 106 brochure from July 2000 (issue 1538 if you care) if you read the small print on the back page it says "Performance - manufacturer's own figures at half payload (468kg)

106 gti (3 door) kerb weight - 950kg
gross train weight - 1886 kg
1886kg - 950kg = 936kg
936 / 2 = 468kg
45 litres of petrol = 32.9 kg**
5 people (who all weight 70kg to make it easier) 70kg * 5 = 350kg
350 + 32.9 = 382.9 kg
and that leaves 85.1 kgs to put in the boot.

figures from the 106 manual.

I guess this is where this legend comes from, but unfortunately I haven't got a saxo brochure. But they are the same car (same engine, gearbox, weight etc), but with different stats (106 0 to 60mph is 8.4 secs, vts is 7.5 secs) and with different insurance groups.

  • I'm not sure if they include petrol weight into the kerb weight or not.

Well actually, on mine you could KEEP driving (in reverse at least) if you open the door, though I found out almost immediately after that the parking sensors stop working... whistle
When my diff was on the way out on my M3, I wanted to listen to it on the ramp with the wheels turning ..... I'll let you use you own imagination to work out how I used broom handles and lots of stretching through the open window to start the car, put it in gear, "move off", and accelerate to hear the noises it was making from outside of the car.

I thought it was on the left so your hand didn't block your view of the screen as you adjusted it. Most are made in Japan, where they drive on the same side as us.

Indicator stalks are also mostly on the left, again for LHD markets so drivers can change gear and indicate simultaneously.

Most Manufacturers dont bother changing these for RHD markets. (1990s jap cars had stalks on right as their home market is RHD - no idea why they stopped doing this)
I have a Pioneer radio with a removable front which is somehow really easy to attach with your left hand from the right. I have not yet had a passenger who can put it on themselves and have tried putting it on from there and struggle. I guess being Japanese they designed it for easy left handed use.

I guess the Japanese cars swapped sides as too many Brits were wiping the windscreen when approaching junctions.

i seriously doubt the load weight of a 106 gti is 936kg as alot of vans will struggle to carry that (legally)
and the reason there 0-60 times are different is because 2nd gear is set slightly higher in the saxo so you dont have to change in to 3rd to get to 60 where as in the 106 you do and this must be true because it came out of jeremy clarksons mouth http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPv5WKEEAjw

It was mentioned earlier in the thread but never confirmed - however I can confirm it:

The W140 Merc S Class does indeed have two reverse gears - they are not shiftable on the move, rather they are pre-selected on the W/S switch before moving off.
So does my 2000 Jag XJR. The 'slower' reverse gear is in normal mode and the 'faster' one is in Sport.

OK - so the lovely Lotus Elan +2 had a Ford Capri windscreen , a front bumper from a 105E Anglia (inverted) and a rear bumper adapted from a Wolseley Hornet. Rear lights courtesy of Alfa Romeo.

Inside there were plenty of Ford and Hillman bits...

Sorry if this has already been said but I haven't read the whole thread:

When the Austin Allegro was launched, it had a square (B.L. called it quartic) steering wheel. The brouchure said "the quartic steering wheel allows for an easier entry to and exit from the vehicle and makes it easy to see the instruments."

The brochure meant "when we stuck on a normal steering wheel, it was murder to get in or out of the car and once in, you couldn't see the instruments. So in a panic, we designed this awful monstosity rather than go back to the drawing board and build a proper car"
They would also pop the back window out if jacked up wrongly

The equipe version came with porous alloy wheels - leaving owners stranded with 4 flat tyres. It was also a special edition with a limited production run - despite this it took BL over 2 years to shift them

Management at BL would always opt for the belgian made versions over the longbridge ones as they were far better built.

Innocenti made an italianised allegro called the innocenti regent - it came with a sports quartic wheel, a natty set of sporty wheels and twin carbs for the A series engine:

This has almost certainly been covered, but in case it hasn't...

Apparently VW got all in a tiff when they learned that Renault were building a three litre Clio. They assumed it was a Clio that used 3 litres per 100km (or whatever the stupid Euro version of MPG is), rather than a Clio with a stonkind great V6 in the back and started throwing money at developing a super eco Polo.

Would have loved to have seen their faces at the motorshow when the Clio was unveiled!
Er, well it has been covered before I think, although the other way round.
Indeed, with the Lupo 3L making them build the V6 Clio (However I dint think the story is actually true)

Gross train weight is with a trailer (hence the 'train' bit).

The 106 GTI and Saxo VTS use exactly the same MA gearboxes with the same 'sport' ratios and same 3.94 final drives. Both will hit 62mph on the limiter in 2nd.

Clarkson is, as usual, wrong and the wide gap between 1st and 2nd exists on all versions of the 106 and Saxo that use the 'sport' closer ratios in the gearbox (106 XSI, Rallye, GTI and Saxo VTS. Not the VTR but that has a hideously long box with wide ratios.)

As Noesph correctly says there is no difference between the performance of GTI and VTS.

Information on MA gearbox ratios here nerdhttp://www.106rallyeforum.com/forum2008/showthread... (Read posts 9-10, Sandy Brown- renowned Peugeot and Citroen tuner)

Naming cars that share parts are not 'weird car facts'. There's nothing weird about it at all. If there was a thread for 'boring car facts' then you can all post there and keep this thread free of inane 'facts' which are indeed common knowledge.
