Overtaking - Do you stay out...
Discussion
to show those behind you it's clear to pass?
Obviously dependant on the road itself and its condition to be overtaking at all; but I've noticed that very few people realise what is going on even when they are edging to the centre line to go, don't see that even though they can't see up the road, the fact that you can would mean that it is safe up to the point you are offside which means much earlier notification of traffic toward.
I don't hang around wanting to shepherd safe overtakes, but if you can help show that it's clear, why not?

Unless it's a mate that knows what you're doing, no random stranger's going to trust you whilst you're blocking their view of the road ahead.
I actually tried this on the way back from Wales with a mate following in a slower car, and he didn't get the hint / want to risk it.
Drive your own drive and let others drive theirs.

Sounds like a slightly odd thing to do unless you are buddies with the chap behind and have discussed doing this?
I won't pass until I can see it's clear. If the car ahead has stayed on the other side of the road, for whatever reason, I'll hold back until he moves back and I can see it's clear for myself. Your judgement might be great, but I'd rather not take the risk.

Are you showing that the road is clear or obstructing the view of people behind you? I come back in as soon as I'm a few car lengths in front, let anyone behind make their own informed choice whether they overtake or not, let them see the road for themselves.
I considered this when writing and thought that if I am on the offside of the road,it is quite clear that there is nothing coming. The merest hint of traffic toward and I am back to the nearside. davidjpowell said:
fks me off. If you have finished overtaking get out of the way so that I can see.
Will be prepared, but not go, until my own eyes confirm that you are not about to pop back and reveal some sort of nasty...
I'm not talking bout being a cars length in front. Of course one should get out of the way. Will be prepared, but not go, until my own eyes confirm that you are not about to pop back and reveal some sort of nasty...

Well that depends. Some people like to stare death in the face so are happy with borderline manoeuvers.
If someone assumed it's ok to overtake based on your being stuck in the oncoming lane then you could get a rude awakening when the car finally decides to get back in lane.
Just my 2p

I'm talking about being200-300 yardsmore like 1/4 mile up the road.
In which case I would be so bemused I would still not be overtaking. I would be wondering why you were doing what you are doing, and what is on the road to cause this.I'm talking about being

I don't stay out, to show it's clear, unless the person following me is someone I know and we are going to the same place or something - This is something that happens very rarely, and even then the roads around here are not very conductive to this.
Hardly anyone round here seems to overtake anyway - I just complete my overtake and move safely back.
