I do it occasionally in the car but its something we often do on the bike and its a bit of an unspoken code that we just "get".

Few people ever take the hint in the car but I cant say I blame them.

One occasion I was on the bike as a lone peice of oncoming traffic on a straight stretch of road (the wide section of the A338, just north of the Thruxton turn off) and I could see an approaching car in a position to overtake the car in front of him, but wasnt because of me. So I went way to my left and waved him out. He took the invitation and overtook, gave a wave and we had a lovely 3-a-breast moment.

Ive also overtaken people who were overtaking people before.

Im something of an overtaking hobbyist.

Are you showing that the road is clear or obstructing the view of people behind you? I come back in as soon as I'm a few car lengths in front, let anyone behind make their own informed choice whether they overtake or not, let them see the road for themselves.
I considered this when writing and thought that if I am on the offside of the road,it is quite clear that there is nothing coming. The merest hint of traffic toward and I am back to the nearside. smile
Who says you aren't a nut job who enjoys stting other drivers up? Or that you aren't having a brain fart and have suddenly decided that the road is dual carriageway.

Tend not to do this. Probably because I don't trust other drivers myself, so why would anyone want to trust me.
Exactly. It's my responsibilty to make sure it's safe to overtake, not somebody else's.

Most people on the road would have absolutely no idea what you were doing IMO. Even if it was a good idea....which it isnt! rolleyes

There are many ways we could assist one another make progress, but if the average motorist can't even keep left on a multi-lane road, there is no way I would trust them on a single-carriageway.

However, I will always try to keep tight to my left if there are cars approaching (from the opposite direction) who are trying to overtake one another.

Also, if someone wants to get past me from behind, I will keep as left as possible and maybe indicate left so they may have an idea of what I'm thinking. Once they move out, if there is nothing behind them I will usually ease of the accelerator so they can get past quicker.

I get back in as soon as it is safe to do so when overtaking, I don't hang about unnecessarily in the oncoming lane. Furthermore, I generally don't follow people through on their overtakes either.

My car is quicker than most cars so I can often jump 2 cars whilst others struggle with one. I really hate it when a car in fron stays out and it means I have to wait for it to pull in and I miss an opportunity.
