Only after a year or so of getting places very slowly did we check the oil level by chance. Zilch. The poor things wasnt stalling it was seizing! On a daily basis!
After a 2.3L, 2.3LX then 2.8i GL dad progressed to a Ford Granada 2.9i Ghia X-pack c/w RS rear spoiler. I was 15, back in '88. It was an E reg. At that time they were really good value for money. The graphic equaliser, back headrests and electric windows. It had a digital mpg/mileometer too.
After that he, like everyone else turned his back on Ford and went down the BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar route. By that time I was grown up and it never had the same effect.

mmmm...
I've got a few to choose from with some fond memories of each car but my favourite would be the Mercedes 560 SEL.
I love those.I've got a few to choose from with some fond memories of each car but my favourite would be the Mercedes 560 SEL.
My dad had a 560 SEC that I adored.
This is my favourite car picture of the week.(so far)
Another pic of it here:
A 1996 VW POLO 1.0 in red. It was brand spanking new at the time and a courtesy car because my old man had had an accident.
I was only 10 at the time, from a poor working class area and it was the newest car on the whole block. Made me feel quite special.
Everytime I see one now I still get that warm feeling.

How cars encompass the social width and breadth of Britain. From the privilege of a weekly boarder jolly old boy, getting picked up in his Fathers AM V8 Vantage to the council estate lad remembering his Dad, getting a Red 1.0 Polo because it was the newest on the estate..which brought a lump to my throat.
I remember my Dad had lovely cars everyone of them. Not Mk1 Lotus Cortinas (which the entire production run must have been owned by PH'ers Dads according to this thread) or the exotica that is claimed but just plain decent cars that got us to the coast for a day trip or to the caravan for a week in gloriously hot weather. I genuinely pity the privileged for not experiencing the un-airconditioned sweltering summers with the windows down(Because all summers were hotter in the 60's and 70's.)
So I was thinking what was my dear old fella's best car well must have been the Vauxhall cresida shooting brake (as he still calls 'em ) cause that got us all to the coast, no hang on it was the Renault 12 because that was the first one to take us to an airport for a foreign holiday (Benidorm I'm afraid not the Bahamas.) Nope hang on again it must have been the Triumph 1850HL because I learn't to drive in it. I was never ashamed of any car my Dad had because he got what he could afford while ensuring I was fed and clothed together with my siblings, and anyone who said they were, (like I wouldn't be seen dead in it), well that's sad.So get the drift..... I love my Dad more than cars.

a volvo 850 t5, when they were brand new. he has no interest in power/cars. when he went there to replace his 240 GL i assumed he would come back with a mid spec 440. he rolled up in a 5cylider turbo, i chuckled and saluted the dealer for making an old man buy some thing he definatly had no intention of.

With Dad's that had a Lotus Cortina, would you not expect us to be PH'ers by default ?The nice cars I remember
Lotus Cortina
A twincam escort of some flavour.
3000GXL Capri
3.0S Capri
944
911 3.2 Carrera
911 (997)
To be fair the 997 is the current car and the 3.2 I now own but remembering the old stuff is nice.

Old man had a car dealership/garage back in the day so as a kid had some great experiences in many different machines. I had a go in pretty much every model from the British Leyland factories, but there were some beauties including an Escort Mexico, Alfa Spider, and E-Type Jag. I remember once getting some chewing gum stuck on the back seat of his new gold Maestro and him going ballistic. Another time some gypos broke in stealing a pristine Mini Cooper S, that was grim as I think the Minis were always my favourite. Was never into the big ones (Seirras, Rover SD1, Jags etc). Maybe because the Minis were a better fit, plus I was allowed to drive them!
