If the 458 and the MP4-12C (sounds like the name of a Casio calculator) were women which would you rather have an affair with?
I'd rather have a go on the understated "girl next door"(who goes like a train), rather than the spray tanned tart with leprosy.

I hear Sky Sports are looking for new presenters.....

Well done to McLaren.

Some rave reviews out there - I especially like Chris Harris being driven by Jenson Button.

The looks are OK - more efficient rather than flamboyant. I never thought the F1 was that much of a looker in the pure drama stakes either, so the theme is continued.

I have to say, though, that most modern supercars seem to be getting more and more anodyne as time passes on. Whether this is due to safety or emission regs, I'm not sure. The Porsche RS models still seem to be flying the flag for excitement and, higher up the value chain, so are the Paganis.

So, would I buy the 458 or McLaren for £180k? No, I would get one of these instead:

I think I may be alone in thinking the 458 looks like utter arse. I have never liked it and fail to see why it rouses so many people.

Obviously beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that noise, but not once have I ever looked at it and considered it pretty, beautiful or even remotely good looking.

That's not me jumping all over it just for sake of its closest rival being British, the Macca is hardly a looker in itself...there's just something about it that's a bit...meh.
I completely agree with this. 458 doesn't do it for me at all; whether in the styling, arcade approach to technology, or the brand associations.

I'm not blown away by the looks of the MP4-12C either but I think it's understated looks mean it won't date nearly as quickly.

See a McLaren F1 now and it still looks amazing - like a homologation special its body is shaped that way for function not style, and I think the MP4-12C is similar. What do you think when you see a 512M or 348 now?

McLaren being true to themselves - technology leaders with a ruthless attention to detail. Makes me feel proud to be British.

100% McLaren for me..

But.. and im not sure how but itd be nice to have beaten the Italians at their own game, i think we see it that we have but they wont see it that way, we have equalled them, it'll have to come down to the trackday 'scuderia esque' versions maybe!? Awesome car though, its in my top 5!!

Are you going to Troll all the McLaren threads today?
I'll see what I can do smile

The front comes from a 360, change the lights and the grille and job done, the side is from Lotus and the rear is from Honda smile

PH, you need to change the power to weight on the 12C.

Yeah, should be 412bhp/ton.

Sounds like the MP4 has the measure of the the 458 in every area except the most crucial – soul. Visually and aurally, from the reviews anyway, it seems to be less exciting. After all, which one of these would a 10-year-old boy gawp the most at in the street? The 458 every time. And ask anyone who owns a Eunos Roadster whether outright speed is central to how much you enjoy your car! I'm sitting firmly in the camp that prefers character over capability. I'd say I was 'unmoved' by the McLaren.

It all comes down to image in my eyes, people (read footballers) will buy the 458 because of the name and the image that comes with it.

Enthusiasts will buy the McLaren because it is excellent and there is a real purity to that. I just hope for gods sake Wayne Rooney doesn’t buy one.

I love them both, but the McLaren a bit more.

On further investigation, the power/weight ratio quoted for the MC-12 is the 'dry - lightweight options' figure, where as the Ferrari power/weight is for the full weight car with fluids.

Not comparing like with like....!!!!

Should be much closer (415 verus 405 bhp per tonne, or similar).

p.s. a 'dry' car cannot produce any bhp figures!!!

Hmmmm....Rooney once upon a time had a Mercedes CLK DTM, Harry Kewell a Porsche 911 GT2....there are some petrolhead footballers out there I expect. They're not all in it for the bling....

This is a pretty good vid from McLaren's website.

At 3.12 Jenson is stood in front of a red MP4-12C and it looks awesome - way better than the white, matt black or orange cars. Maybe McLaren have made an error with their launch colour - although I can understand why they didn't go with red!

Quick question; If you're going to pay £170 odd K for a car, wouldn't you EXPECT it to come with the better tyres?

For day to day conditions the slower tyres are better.

smile

Corsa's are track tyres really that you wouldn't want to spend too much time on if it was persisting it down.

The better tyres are more road legal slicks though, than nice year-round tyres.

It makes the car less 'everyday' to have the fancier tyres.

I must say, I'd struggle having to do 0-125mph 0.2s slower hehewink
