Was the Ford Cortina really sold in the US and A?
Yes it was. I've seen a few here and there are a number of Lotus Cortinas in private collections here, but I think those were imported. Sports car racing in 1960s America saw many wealthy individuals import the "latest & greatest" to stay competitive on the track. I've seen old entry lists of races on the East coast and was stunned by the variety of cars entered. Even NSU Prinz's, which I've never seen in the US.

Great as the Bullitt car chase scene is, there are couple of things that are wrong with it. That VW Beetle (come on, you know what I'm talking about), and the scene where Mcqueen overshoots the corner reverses and wheelspins, there was no need to speed it up. Otherwise perfect.

The sound track to the Mustang 390GT was indeed a recording of a 427cu GT40. The Mustang had some serious upgrades done so that it could just 'keep up' with the straight line ability of the 440 Charger. Two cars of each were made for the filming. Both Chargers were wrote off and one Mustang was wrote off. The other survives in its unrestored form.
The sound track of the GT390 in Bullitt WASN'T from a GT40 MkII..... it's a popular continued myth and if you've ever heard a GT40 MKII in real life, you'd know why it couldn't be a big-block MkII.
The sound was from the modded GT390's and was all recorded at the pre-filming testing/rehersal with the cars and (badly) dubbed later-on.

The two Chargers were different specs, one was a 4-speed and one was an auto, and only one was a real R/T, both in fact were repainted black for filming, as one was blue ane the other yellow.
The 4-speed Charger is rumoured to have survived (there are photos on the net of it), and is being restored..... not seen yet though whether it has been authenticated as being on of the film cars or not.

Totally agree! One of my favourite films ever. I love the fact that when the baddies are on either side of the Falcon Max hits the brakes hard. A bit more effective than a load of panel bashing along the road like so many other (American)films.
Also when the fuel warning light began to flash and he had to turn off the supercharger even the dog knew they were in trouble it gave the whole scene a sense of added menace,
Watched it again last night (the opening chase sequence) while Wifey was at the Co-Op...

For sheer edge of the seat excitement in a car chase, it HAS to be the one in Ronin.

As cool as as Bullit is, it's McQueen, the baddie driver and the two cars plus their respective 'soundtracks' that make the chase scene memorable. As a piece of adrenalin-inducing cinema, it fails to hit the spot in the same way as the Ronin scene. I think Bullit's is overrated. Much prefer Vanishing Point for car chasing shenanigans.

Also, the slightly under-cranked filmed (so when it's played back at the normal 24fps, the action appears to be happening faster - but not comically so) French Connection one is great too.

I would say on a slightly lighter note that you cant not count the chase in the original Italian Job or some of the action from The Blues Brothers as being some of the best ever.

Wow, I wished my '66 Galaxie with 390FE 4BBL and Super 60's sounded as good as that, hang on, they're the same engine!!!

Seriously though, I agree, it was always 'word-of-mouth' with the GT40 soundtrack. However, BOTH Chargers WERE crushed after the filming. That is noted in the DVD The Making Of Bullitt (2003).

Yes, I know, and I have strong doubts that the car 'found' is the real deal.... but you never know.

Make of this article what you will.....

Its a homage to a great car chase fromt he height of the Muscle car era, a bit of fun, dont see the problem, it will get kids knowing what these fantastic cars were and that can only be a good thing.
