That's fairly easy surely then, I normally average 60-70mph on long cross country trips.
how long is a 'long' cross country trip in britain? Liverpool to Hull on the M62 maybe?

Average speed is irrelevant, this kind of thing is seriously cool.

John O Groats - Lands End - over night on the shortest day.

Approx 16 hours to do 602 miles.

Only need average about 40 mph....
602 miles? Its more like 840.

YUp you're right - more like 55 mph then.

Surely a better way to do this (January is not a pretty month) would be to do Sunrise in Land's End on Jun 21st, to Sunset in John O Groats. Still a 16 hour time limit but you get a nice Summer day to enjoy the scenery.

Best done in a convertible, did Aberdeen to Romford overnight in my old MK1 MX-5, fantastic to drive through the night with the roof down.

I'd like to have done that with you but won't be watching Clarkson's cr*p. Well done.

To be fair, with the state of the M62 that could take days.

Having only gone 'topless' myself in the last year (almost a full year since the SLK arrived) I concur about night time driving with the roof down. Did it in January when it hit zero (thanks for a good heater and heated seats). But even at say 10 degrees on a nice night - great !!

I did Stirling to Southampton at an average speed of exactly 70mph. One stop for fuel. Easy.

I'd say it's very do-able.

I did from 20 miles away from Land's end to Inverness in 15 1/2 hours a few years back in a 3dr Escort Estate Popular Plus 1.3 biggrin. It was the day after the total Eclipse (1999?) and the first 180 miles took 7 1/2 hours. The remaining 500 miles took only 8. Without the jams we suffered, I don't think it would be hard, although the A9 in summer could throw a spanner in the works.

I've made the 550 miles from here in Pembrokeshire, SW wales to Carrbridge (Inverness-shire) in 8 and a half, going the rural way through Wales. Via Motorway, that would be 630ish miles. That was Christmas eve on empty roads. It's not about the speed, but fewer stops and for short lengths of time that's the key.

My best run was back in in 1992 when I did Frejus in the South of France to Le Havre (via Clermont Ferrand) in a Triumph Spitfire in 8:50. An average of about 83 mph. By the time I got on the ferry the bottom end was rattling like mad but it still got me back to Worcestershire (at a more sedate 65 ish)!

Happy days...

As one of the fortunate participants in this particular pub-inspired event I can honestly say it was one of the most fun automotive experiences I have enjoyed.
Well organised by Chris & an excellent car & passenger selection made it a challenge that I needed no persuasion to take part in.
Looking forward to the next 'Event' Chris, with a slightly more powerful car this time, more in the Monaro arena!
Really MUST buy a battery for it...!

Certainly sounds like a great way to spend an evening in the car.

Your only problem for this year is if the event becomes a victim of it's own success, especially if Pube hair Clarkson starts shouting about it. The roads will be so busy, it'll look like the Gumball.

I wonder if a St Bees -> Whitby Coast to Coast could work for us Northerners?

A route like this would be great for a nimble car -

NSEW in any order > In 24 hours

And which way would you do it?

whistle

Actually if you wanted to get carried away you could do NSEW in each country, England, Wales and Scotland.
