To be frank, I'm disappointed!! I was hoping you'd throw in some obscure yank tanks in for both...

yes My granddad had one in the late 80's early 90's. Not sure if it was an E28 or E34 as the model year changed round about then.
I do remember that it struggled to get up inclines on the motorway though.

I would imagine that the Caparo T1 has the highest power to weight ratio of a "production" car.

The Mondeo can be had with a 1.6 litre petrol lump, and it's a particularly gutless one at that. I imagine it would be dangerously slow.

8 seat Nissan Serena van was available with 75bhp diesel, as was the old 200 Merc (E-class size) in taxi spec

The last generation Fiat Doblo was apparently available with under 50bhp/tonne.

Horses actually generate considerably more than 1hp. A horse power was the average amount of power that a horse could put out over the course of a farming day, meant to be a representation of how much ground a machine could plow in relation to a horse, or something equally odd.

Merc W140 S350D was pretty bad, 150bhp turbo diesel lugging around nearly 2 tonnes. Bet that flew to 60mph in about 15 seconds....

Indeed. The slowest Mondeo still does 0-60 in under 13 seconds. Hardly "dangerously slow".

I once had a Merc 190E with a 2.0 non turbo diesel engine and manual gearbox.

I remember driving it from London to Scotland and back it felt like the slowest accelerating car I had ever driven. 0 to 80 could be counted in minutes rather than seconds.

And it was Beige with a beige cloth interiror and wind up windows. Possibly the worst spec'ed car I've ever had the misfortune of driving.
