Your dad is getting a what? a E39 I guess
I really don't get people who say id happily have a 530i but couldn't consider a M3 because of the potential bills, just accept that all these BMWs from the same sort of era have the potential to throw up a huge bill. You can just as easily kill a engine in a 530i where as someone else might be running a E36 M3 with 180k an no problems this is the risk you take with buying cars.
If it were my money id save a chunk, its your bonus and granted you feel that you'd like to treat yourself but id sooner have a cheaper car a good maintenance budget and then head off on a few track days or Euro tours with the saved cash. Give me a £5K S4 with under 100k on it preferably nogaro blue an happy days.

Out of interest, how have you driven these various cars at 20 with regards to insurance?
Private roads of course But since I am now in for some sort of lecture on the morals of certain insurance practises I will now state that I am a bullstter and don't even hold a license let alone capable of driving such vehicles...Now then....

Be different at 20, S60R with the remap would be a fantastic bit of kit.
But, spending a bit on the set up of your current S60 would probably take it to a very similar level of performance for a fraction of the price.
For other choices the Legacy seems like a glaring ommission from your list. Infact there's a fair few Japanese turbos that would do the job but I guess insurance is maybe an issue.
To be honest a lot of T5D5 trawling has had me thinking that, 300bhp is well within the realms of what is possible with minimal work and with a few suspension upgrades the handling can be improved no end...But, spending a bit on the set up of your current S60 would probably take it to a very similar level of performance for a fraction of the price.

However, the main requirement on that list is AWD/4WD, because no matter what, the T5 will remain FWD which just limits it somehow...
I was looking for something similar to you last summer and because I needed a tow car ended up with the Jag athough I was looking at sub £4K cars under 7s and ideally rwd/awd.
I looked at Celica GT4s (the later ones) as they're a car that even 15 years old still looks new but check insurance first as they can be a bit . Similarly you could get something like a GTS Skyline for that. Or an S15 or S14a. They're all in the same category as the RX-8 - small back seats but for occasional use they're ok.

If you need more rear room a A4 3.0 Quattro perhaps as long as you get a manual should just skim 7s?

Was looking at the Audi but the insurance was similar to the S60R, and IMHO you get more car with the Volvo... No question which on of the 2 would be the quickest either...I looked at Celica GT4s (the later ones) as they're a car that even 15 years old still looks new but check insurance first as they can be a bit . Haven't heard of any reliability issues with the Audis though bnut to be fair I haven't looked into them too much...
Sounds to me like the S60R is the one.
If you don't have any complaints about the S60 other than it being fwd and the 'R' solves that then I can't really see how it would be a mistake unless you specifically want something different. Maybe check out some of the others too just in case but I think you'd be better buying a good S60R than putting the money into the S60 then still wanting awd...

It is the one I'm swinging towards, however don't know whether to get the 3 series for a year and then get the R just to get that thing about having a Beemer out of the back of my head...If you don't have any complaints about the S60 other than it being fwd and the 'R' solves that then I can't really see how it would be a mistake unless you specifically want something different. The difference is I know the S60R wouldn't leave me dissapointed whereas the 3 series on the B-roads wouldn't, but on the motorway might, just might have me regretting it...
But then if it was only for a year...
As for tweaking the T5, best bet for that is T5D5 I would imagine... PH on the whole isn't overly full of people who appreciate the "pipe and slippers" badge

I run a 530i and have done for 5 years and I'm in no doubt that running an M3 instead would be a considerably more costly excercise all round!07/08 Mazda 3 MPS Aero?

What would insurance be like on that? I hazard a guess at better than an E46 330i
It's a jack of all trades.

List of my “specifications”:
- £9,000 (The lower the better)
- 4WD/RWD Manual
- Comfortably sub 7 secs to 60.
- 150 (ish) or more top end…
- Respectable handling (the better the better though!!!)
- Leather interior with good (for age) spec…
- Pass the “nice place to be at 6.30am on a January morning” test.
- Seat 4, preferably 5, adults (a little cramped in the back isn’t my problem, I’m not going to be a passenger, but nothing circa old Fiesta for leg room)
- Not so pig ugly as to make small children vomit, but something of a Q-car about it would be nice…
- Would be great if the car could be remapped up a good few hp….

Look at the 3 MPS and that engine in that size car the one criteria it didn't fulfil was RWD/AWD... Like I said driven a lot of hot hatches (test drives) the most recent being the VRS Fabia and although they are a great laugh, they don't quite do it for me for some reason... Don't know why... Believe it or not the insurance on the Beemer isn't too bad...AB said:

I bought one of those (Well, a manual non Champagne) at 22 and paid £1k to insure it.What would insurance be like on that? I hazard a guess at better than an E46 330i

That one is a bit of a shame - it isnt quite as original as it makes out, it should have the gorgeous 18 inch Style 37 wheels as the Champagne II was fitted with them as standard.

Very reasonable on the insurance, that's why I suggested it over a 330 as I expect that'll be a bit heavier on the premium. That one is a bit of a shame - it isnt quite as original as it makes out, it should have the gorgeous 18 inch Style 37 wheels as the Champagne II was fitted with them as standard.
