ive got a budget similar to yours and im goin for a 330ci convertible, however you are younger than me so probaly require something a bit 'younger' and 'sportier'. why not go for the following:-

FOCUS ST
VW GOLF GTI MK 5
VW GOLF R32 MK 4
ASTRA VXR
SCOOY WRX OR WRX STI
EVO 5, 6, 7 OR 8
E46 M3
SEAT LEON CUPRA FR
NEW SHAPED CIVIC TYPE R
NISSAN 350Z
MAZDA RX8 231PS
FORD ESCORT RS COSTWORTH----SICKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!

HOPE THIS HELPS, im personally happy with a 330ci convertible, not riduculously fast but still fun, sporty, comfy, and a nice cruiser esp with the roof down in summer
goodluck
Quite.the opposite... young and sporty means ragged and crashed a lot to insurers...

Need something slightly different. Hence my current car...

Great list though...

Sorry but 9k won't get you anywhere near a tidy Escort Cossie... For the money the OP is looking at, an E39 M5 is VERY hard to ignore, bar the insurance.

Like I said, my dad is currently trawling for one he want's...

I suppose I could just go and beat him to it smile Again, insurance is surprisingly cheap once I hit 21...

Just out of interest (from someone who always whines about insurance and is amazed what people pay), what are the type of quotes you're getting for this sort of car?

Well, assuming I am 21 it's varying from around £1k to £2.5k and that is with no fudging of details and in my own name. Currently paying about £1200 a year fully comp.

FFS. I'm 42, driven for 18 years, 14 years NCB, 1 claim and in a 'low risk' employment group and 'low risk' residential area and the best I can get for an E39 M% from my current insurer is quoting £1100.

Time for a change I think.

List of my “specifications”:
- £9,000 (The lower the better) - Easily
- 4WD/RWD Manual AWD
- Comfortably sub 7 secs to 60. Yep
- 150 (ish) or more top end… Yep
- Respectable handling (the better the better though!!!) Yep. Mine's gone from unpredictable to fantastic with new tyres
- Leather interior with good (for age) spec… Leather, climate, cruise, Xenons, Bose, Sat-Nav (optional) & PDC(optional)
- Pass the “nice place to be at 6.30am on a January morning” test. Yep
- Seat 4, preferably 5, adults (a little cramped in the back isn’t my problem, I’m not going to be a passenger, but nothing circa old Fiesta for leg room) Yep
- Not so pig ugly as to make small children vomit, but something of a Q-car about it would be nice… Yep
- Would be great if the car could be remapped up a good few hp…. A simple remap should take you to about 290bhp. Breathing mods will take you over 300bhp
I'm delighted with mine. The only reason I can see for ever changing it would be if my annual mileage increased significantly, but then I'd probably consider getting a £1k diesel for commuting and keep the MPS. 320 miles of mixed driving to a tank, and so easy to drive at motorway speeds with a surprising amount of kick available should you need it. 0.7 leptons to 1.2 leptons can be done very quickly should you choose to do so.

I'm in a similar position to the OP, apart from being twice his age. Having gone from a Mondeo V6 to an S60 T5, I've finally learnt the difference between handling and grip. I'm getting places quicker, but having less fun doing it.

When selecting my next car I'll be prioritising handling much more, but I'll be reluctant to lose that turbo grunt. My current thinking is leaning towards a Mk4 Mondeo with the 2.5t and a remap, as soon as they're within my price range.

ETA: Something like this one perhaps - fits the 'Q' criteria, if not the AWD / 4WD:

Hence why it is on the short list!!!

Mazda: A lot of car and not very old for the money. Remappable smile
Volvo: Sheer power and I love sitting in it... Remap you have a properly quick car (for a 20 yr old 330bhp is A LOT)
BMW: RWD and the cheapest. And it's a BMW. Not a badge snob but... Cheapest to insure too...

Get what you mean about handling and grip...

Like I said I can keep up with things in the bends you really wouldn't expect too in the S60; especially if you are nice and progressive with the throttle. But it is the lack of "feel" that gets me...

You can probably cross Audi's and VAGs off the list then as I've found them to be very lacking in 'feel' even though the grip was there.

Admiral - they used to be best value for BMW drivers.
