No issue with students who work (that's you) and no issue with students doing something useful (I'm guessing you're in engineering of some sort?) so no issue with you at all. Really though, in your position, get a cheap basic thing that will still be reliable enough, cheap and easy to fix if it does break and won't cost you the earth. There is an obvious choice and it isn't a new Polo.
Cheap and basic seems to be the way forward, I'm young and naive though, the thought of a brand new car seemed nice, but in reality, I should probably wait and knock around in a shed for a few years first smile

Well spotted. I fail to see how any of those (especially a Yaris!) wouldn't make a decent Uni car. I'd have killed for a two year old neat little hatchback when I was at Uni. In the end I struggled through with my Mum's old Primera estate until the clutch went, then after a brief dalliance with an MG Midget (conked out on the drive home!) I bought the first of many knackered old Peugeots for less than £200.
Sadly my dad's van is nearly at the end of it's lease, so that'll be going back soon and it seems the Yaris will be becoming shared between my dad and myself. Can't complain though, I've had a year of trouble free motoring out of it, just a shame I can't keep it for much longer.

Citroen C1? Can be had for under £100pm on contract hire over 2 years. Sips on fuel and cheap to insure. Covered by warranty if anything goes wrong, but it's unlikely as they are so simple and basic.
I've looked at these and it seems to be a fairly viable option, they look OK, and all reports I've seen of them seem to say that they're pretty decent cars.

Buying new is in some ways a good idea on a limited income - at least it means there won't be any big bills because it's all under warranty.

I wouldn't want to be shackled to it though TBH. May be worth looking for something truly horrendous like a Hyundai i10 second hand, which will still have most of the very long warranty on it.
This is my thinking, as I'm not going to have much cash up front, monthly payments seem to ease the need for much of an initial outlay, but again, as you say you are tied in for a number of years.

You're saying your two year old Yaris is a "shed"??

Oh no, I was referring to a banger that I could pick up for peanuts. I wouldn't call my Yaris over like that smile

OK, so are the other two cars in your profile not yours either?

Can you really lease a polo INCLUDING VAT for 150pm? Plus fuel, plus tyres, plus servicing, plus a grand+ for insurance? Seems a lot for a student on part time work to pay on top of paying for fees and going out etc.

but i understand the theory of a lease with no surprises...

Forgive if I'm wrong, OP, but upon looking in your garage you already seem to have a number of cars. Can you not take one of those to uni? Spend the rest of the money on booze and tarts?
Yeh, Sadly I'm not the only 'Moron' who uses this account, theres my brother and dad too, dad's is the van, bro's is the Astra and the Yaris is shared.
Booze and Tarts? I Could always walk....

It's just over 150 including VAT, and yep, it is a lot of money its just the idea that the cars under warranty and far less likely to leave me stranded.

Get a Mk2 Nissan Micra. My OH gets 48mpg and it's an auto, a manual should be even better.

fair enough - who will take the lease out - I'd have thought leasing companies wouldn't have like the idea of students with limited credit history?

And if someone else leases it, doesn't this give insurance issues - will it be insured as you being the main driver?

That's £150 EVERY month. If you can't use any of your family's cars, get yourself something respectable but cheap to run, like I said - a VAG 1.9 TDI. I'd go for the Fabia, but you may want to go for a Polo or an Ibiza or something for "image". Spend a grand, maybe £1500 on the car, and that £150 will do you for coke and hookers very nicely.

Thanks mate, I think you've given me a bit of a new path to go down, I'll look into something like you've suggested. I'd guess that anything VAG will be fairly reliable, even if it's slightly older so long as its been well serviced etc.

My my this is a mess.

Mk4 Fiesta 1.25 zetec. Reliable, cheap to buy, cheap to insure, cheap to fuel up. If that's too much money, a 106 diesel.

ETA: I might have gone too cheap on both of those by the looks of it. But I can't speak highly enough about my old Fiesta. In the family for 12 years and not a thing went wrong with it, nothing.

Yeah, and the 1.9s are economical and can be tuned if you want a bit of extra oomph a few years down the line.

Usually I'd not recommend a diesel, but at this price point they make a lot of sense. Also consider a 306 D Turbo (the 1.9 over the 2.0 tbh) for something cheaper, or a Clio 1.5 dCi for something a bit pricier.

The Ka is a good choice too. Economical petrol engine that will just go on and on. My best mate's parents were in the middle of a messy divorce while he was at Uni ooop North. He would drive 600 miles each weekend to mediate the peace in his Ka, which just soaked up the miles. He never complained about comfort or lack of power, and he's a 6'3" prop forward.

Think I just threw up in my mouth!

My uni car is a Corsa C 1.3 CDTi. Good on fuel, tax, insurance and it is cheap. My weekend car is the Astra VXR Nurburgring though.

Seriously? Thanks, I thought he was looking for a car with one wheel or something. Now it all makes perfect sense! I had never ever seen 'University' shortened to 'Uni' before now. It must be one of these words that only youths use. How dare they shorten words to make them easier to say and/or type. It's (oops, sorry 'it is') shocking that the English language is being butchered in this way.

smile

Edited because I had the audacity to abbreviate "I had" to "I'd".

In your situation I'd have either an old (as in late 90's early 00's) Micra or Yaris. Both very reliable and more refined than their size would lead you to believe.

+1 for something along the lines of a C1.

I've been reliably informed that Aygos have comfier seats. I think they'll cost a smidge more than an equivalent C1 or Pug 107, but check them all out and see what you prefer.

Insurance group 1, £20 tax, the 300 miles will take about 5 gallons/30quid of fuel, CD player/aux input too for a long drive.

It'll be hard to get a newer car for cheaper, but this option will obviously have a higher initial outlay than the 10 year old Micra/Ka/Yaris suggestions.

(Waits to be proved wrong hehe)
