Hi guys, Im a student doing mechanical engineering. Part of my course was to design a product. I designed a tyre valve which displays if the tyre pressure is too low using springs and coloured plastic inside the valve.

Any way part of the project is a survey about tyres. Its 10 questions takes about 1 minute and really help me out.

Thanks guys

Done.

If possible, it may be worth amending the question about the cost of a set of tyres.
I can't imagine many people spending less than £400 on a set of tyres (on here at least!). smile

On the first question there is no way to say more than 300 miles, I think you need to add this in as I (and others I presume) don't fit into any of the buckets currently...

I spend over £400 on tyres on a car worth less than 2 grand.

Think they already exist, don't know if that has any bearing on your project?

Doing the survey now though.

Done, however for your last question it could be taken a few different ways.

I would potentially spend a lot of money on an accurate tyre pressure monitor, however just something that says 'tyre pressure low' and doesn't provide a warning in the car doesn't really help me if that makes sense.

Done - but second the above, try to make sure there's an option for everyone, even if it seems ridiculous to you! A thousand miles a week is not extraordinary.

And neither is <100 miles a week in your own car, if you spend 10 hours a day in a bus or lorry.

boxedin Am I not allowed to have spent under 200 on my tyres?

Oh, ok... mine were 200quid a corner. hehe

Survey Done.

Maybe it would be better to make clear whether the cost of the device was per wheel/tyre or per set. I bet a transponder and display unit would be cheaper, more robust and easier develop than a mechy one, but I guess your project needs to be mechanical.

Remember very few people will want to add something that makes their car look silly, so however this set-up works it will have to be very compact.

Good luck with the project and your studies in general.

+1 to the post below WRT need for some level of quantitive accuracy, otherwise you might as well just look at the tyre and see if it "looks flat".;)

I'd argue that the last question is ambiguous. I might happily pay 50 quid for a device which magically sends a text message to my mobile phone with my tyre pressures in it when I want it to, but certainly wouldn't for a pressure gauge that you have to put onto the valve because you can get perfectly functional ones of them for about ten quid.

I also wouldn't want anything that adds significant unsprung mass to the car.

Sorry, that did come across a bit 'Billy big Balls' didn't it...! getmecoat
I appreciate there are cars that will be cheaper than that, but even the modest sized ones on my MX-5 were £400 a set.

My MX5 tyres are £38 a corner, for Yokohamas, not ditchfinders..

But, you say "More than £150" etc.. Shouldn't it be less than £150, as more than £150 opens you up to anything above £150.
