Hey,

My nephew passed his test today (hooray for him).

I've given him my old car (a 1.4 Astra - M reg '94) value is pretty much nothing but it's road worthy with an MOT etc.

However, it seems his best quote is circa £5,000.

Anyone have any suggestions as to how/who to contact to see if he can get a more affordable quote?

Thanks!
Phil.

£5k to insure a cheap snotter? Madness.
Still, statistically he's a high risk i suppose.

Good luck!

I think you may have to sell the 1.4 Astra and buy something that isn't stratospheric to insure...

Isn't it obvious that anything that has a bigger engine than 1.1l and that is a hatch will be shocking to insure? Or am I missing something?

Add parents to the policy

Play around on comparison sites adjusting the excess + and - to see how it affects the premium

play around with milage but don't lie

1.4l is HUGE (for a 17 year old to get insured reasonably on)

Sorry mate but a 1.4 Astra will be seen as a deathrap in the hands of a 178 year old on his own (and not just for him either).

I reckon you might have to get rid and get something smaller.

£5k sounds about right.

He has two options.

1. Get the anal lube out and pay up.
2. Don't pay up, and get the anal lube out when he gets caught.

My nephew having the same problem. Just read the age discrimination act down the phone and tell the brokers to stop taking the urine.

Just shop around. I got a Saxo VTR as my first car (mad 17 year old who thought it would be 'cool').

£1,600 for the year, 8,000 miles (I did about 5k...), £500 voluntary and £250 compulsory excess and a car worth £2.5k...

It can be done, I just put my old man on as a named driver and shopped around! It may not be possible to sell the Astra and buy a 1.0ltr so just shop around...

My 19 year old brother [about to take his test] is looking at £2k minimum for a cinquecento or similar. Not willing to part with cash he is getting a 125cc bike for a year which is <£200 TPF+T for a Honda CG125. A bit more manageable, but is slightly more dangerous in the hands of some teenagers. Once he has finished as a student and gets a job he will look at 4 wheels again...

Compulsary road tests for the over 170s needed now !

I had a 2 litre capri as my first car at 18 (10 years ago), The insurance was about £2,000.

I didnt die, nor did any other humans, but I callously massacred a pheasant.

Yeah. You're missing the fact that I didn't have a 1.1l car to give away and that the Astra is worth fk all.

Thanks everyone - some options to present to him.

I think his parents already are on his siblings policies. What about me? Could I be on his policy?

What a joke - is a 17 year old really that much more of a menace in an old 1.4 than a more modern 1.0/1.2 - many of which will be more powerful anyway.

I had the same problem just after I passes my test
If the car is worth very little go for third party f&t. I did this on my 1.2 corsa.
First year was 1800 but the first is always the worst
I'm with bell on a bonus accelerator at the moment - although they are only 10month policies the prices seem pretty decent and give you a full years no claims smile
Hope this helps a bit
