I'm going to have to read this later - but I want to hear lots about it!

Over the last 6 months I've had a keen eye on the 968 adverts, looked at that particular one quite often too.

The odd thing is, I never liked the 968 when it was current - but now they look better than ever!! Havent seen one on the road in a while though - last one I saw was taking part in the gumball.

If your missus is who I think she is, pass on my regards too. I assume she still has the red Chim?
yes That's one car that isn't ever going to be sold. We'll live in him with rags on our backs (polishing ones of course) before it would enter our heads.

She sends hers to you and yours too!
I think the ladies natter away on occasion. hehe

We're currently re-building half the house (or it feels like it!) but when it's done you guys should pop up for a weekend.

Hiya John wavey

Nice little write up and I bet the grin is permanently plastered on your face now. It was an awesome and very honest looking car and I'm really pleased you bought her.
I struggled with my fat arisse in those seats though so god knows how you're getting on wink

wavey mate,

Massive grin from ear to ear.

Will be spending the weekend cleaning and ShinEtsu greasing the seals. Going to let the Mrs have her first go in it at the weekend as well smile

Was thinking of having a drive out but there is so much to do before the first meet on the 26th with every w/e thereafter filled until October!

Well done.

I'd been looking at that ad for the last few weeks - very tempted myself, but glad to see its gone to a PHer. biggrin

When you've got some more miles on it please post your thoughts and comparisons on the box vs. CS. All the contemporary reviews rave about the CS so I'm interested to hear your opinion and especially the comparison with the more modern boxster.

cheers
Rob

Fab choice of car John. I'm chuffed for you. If it's anything like my 944, you'll become better and better aquainted as the miles go on, and come to realise that there is a whole load more to a good car than raw power. With the right geo set-up (it has been geo'd recently, hasn't it?) and a good road, you will not be able to find a more communicative, more incisive, better flowing chassis without spending a lot more cash. (I recall reading a test of a 944S2, a 944Turbo and a 968 from one of the bigger magazines, and the reviewer described the 924/944/968 chassis as being the third-best chassis ever made by porsche, behind the Cayman and GT3.)

Join up on the PCGB forum ('tis free) and you'll find a bunch of fellow enthusiasts.

Happy driving.

Great read, i also resisted the temptation to scroll down.

Congrats on the car!

Is it wrong at this point for me to give my opinion on the 968? Probably. I'll shut up.

Looks like the last geo was done about 5k miles ago and it certainly tracks dead on. Will be getting a full geo done in a month or so though anyway. Not bothered just yet as it doesn't 'feel' out and there are a few bits and bobs in the pipeline that would negate the results.

Once I have a few more miles under my belt I’ll post up a comparison with the Boxster. Initial impressions are that it is obviously much quicker in a straight line and that cornering speeds are largely unchanged. I think that the tyre profile is different to the Boxster but the footprint is the same.

John,

Geo - yes, if you have other work planned then do the geo last. (Only a nincompoop would do otherwise!) How old is the suspension? They can hide worn shocks startlingly well, and there are a number of 944's around on their originals without the owners realising what they are missing out on. Some new shocks (and bushes, and tie rods) won't be cheap but will transform the car.

It should be a bit quicker than a 986 non-S box in a straight line, but the handling will be totally different. FWIW, I haven't got on with any of the boxsters I have driven, but love the more mechanical feel of the 944. I'd agree that the on-road footprint is similar, but the 968 will be a much more practical car.

(I'm impressed that Dove House fixed the gearbox whine before you bought it. It's a pretty common trait on a lot of 968's, and I don't think it is damaging, let alone terminal.)

The car had a full report on it at the end of 2008 when the previous owner bought it and as a result only required bushes for the anti-roll bars (owner replaced both with M030 ones) There was nothing concerning at that time and it has had a full check over by Dove, which given their openness I am inclined to believe are 100% straight when they say they saw nothing wrong. Can't recall exactly when it was all changed though. It might be an upgrade in the future but I have other plans right now.

On the road it is 100% and when I take it on track I will be doing so to stretch it's legs rather than for lap records wink

Famous last words and all that but I have to say that for me it has been the perfect buying experience. No one has been anything less than straight and they have done everything that they said they would.

Sounds very promising. Suspension for these is depressingly expensive, so if your current set is OK then it's a chunk of cash saved.

M030 was an option on the 944's, and included thicker ARB's and bigger brakes. The thicker ARB's were standard on the 968CS's (which yours is), and as such M030 wasn't an option. I don't know whether they offered bigger brakes on their own as a seperate option. (It's a slightly moot point as the standard brakes were more than adaquete for pretty much any use, particularly if kept in good nick.)

Dove House sound very good indeed. Should I ever find myself with enough money to buy a car from a dealer then I'll seriously consider their stock ... thanks for the recommendation.

Hi

The 968CS didnt come with thicker roll bars as standard (they are however thicker than the 944 ones i believe). The suspension is something like 20mm lower than the coupe though which is pretty much the only difference.

M030 on the 968 adds bigger front brakes and different brake bias, adjustable shocks with rear helper springs, larger anti-roll bars and a lower ride height than CS

Hope this helps

One day I read a short piece in a magazine about a car for sale, an article I hadn’t got round to in the weeks since the monthly had landed on the door mat.
Was it the 'driving the ads' bit of last month's Evo? Finally got around to finishing that issue and recognised the car.
