I'm considering getting one of these. I need a diesel that is good on fuel and don't want another Golf. It is essentially just a squashed Golf but doesn't really have that much competition if you think about it.

A squashed golf made mostly out of aluminium instead of steel, with 4wd and a nicer interior.

I just had a TT tdi on extended test for a couple of days. I was well impressed. Fabulous interior, great handling, quattro, 139 co2 and 50-odd mpg.

Everyone banging on about diesel vs petrol really is missing the point. Of course this car will drive better with the tfsi engine. But if you are a company car driver, the tdi will be hundreds of pounds a months cheaper. I simply could not afford the petrol version. Personally, I love petrol engines but equally I have a family to feed!

Those who says it's just a Golf in drag are equally wrong. I had a Mk VI Golf TDI until recently and now have a Scirocco TDI. The TT is streets ahead of both in terms of handling and quality. It really feels like a completely different car whereas the Scirocco does just drive like a Golf.

I've owned "proper" coupes in the past and the TT was comfortably as good as those.

I think the OP answered his own question in the first sentence - for him, the most important feature of a performance car is the engine. For some people (me included), it's not.

Indeed... I can have as much fun with a diesel, as I can with a petrol. I think limiting yourself based purely on a fuel is a little shortsighted.

most people want a nice car, nice interior, looks a little sporty but doesn't cost them the earth to run.

that is why VAG designed the tt diesel and that is why it sells well.

that is also why if i wanted a tt, for me, it would be the diesel i went for.

I've just replaced my rx8 with a TT TDI coupe and think its a great car!

The RX8 had to go due to engine that was down on compression and bearings were shot. Couldn't face a £3K+ rebuild on something worth not much more than £1.5K as part exchange.

Not going to miss the poor fuel consumption of the RX8 one bit - should at least half my monthly fuel expenditure.
