Rarely in stationary traffic as i prefer every shortcut in the book around London even if it is longer as the crow flies, but a similar problem to Chris R with an Impreza P1 returning 17mpg even with an out of town blast counted in the same tankful in the calculation!

But the extra few £ in the tank is worth it when the road opens up.

And Chris, having heard a C63 day before yesterday right in front of me, am inclined to agree with you....

I knew it had gone up but that's taking the piss and it's considerably more than 46%.
No, I make it 45.9%-ish. How do you get "considerably more than 46%"?
... because of the 136.83 GBP per litre price instead of the 1.38 GBP litre price?

Somewhat of a mildly performing diesel is the way forward if you earn less than 30k a year , drive for longer than 25 minutes everyday and don't like suicide . I filled up 75 quid and I got nearly 2/3 of a tank , that will last me 400 miles at around 30mpg in London in tdi with 170bhp

I dont think 11mpg is bad for a amg wagon , I could get about the same in new FFRS, all my other <2.5L have been around 15-20mpg max . I guess no one realises how bad consumption gets in town till they live in London

I remember my old man moaning when it hit £1 / Gallon. Not per litre, per gallon!

You have to be a bit mental to use that kinda car on that kinda commute, or really wealthy.

Just get a little diesel runabout and then have something better for the thrills (ie, Caterham or whatnot)

I drive an AMG as my daily commuter in London (well its the only car that I owm).
Its 3.5 Miles to work, 3.5 back.
That and a bit of running around in town at the weekends and evening means a tank every 2 weeks at £100 a throw. Fortunatly its a nice car to waft around in so you don't need to go fast to enjoy yourself and it is so much nicer than the tube, which isn't exactly free anyway.
Also to the good is that my workplace is just inside the former Western Congestion Charging Zone, so the rise in price of fuel has been more than compensated for my the dropping of that nasty tax. So well done Boris !
Also unless you are venturing out of town posh petrol is not worth it, even out of town I have my doubts about 98 ron, its a V8 not a high revving 2 stroke.

The almost statuesque London commute.

Glad I live Up North and don't have to worry about such things.

I have my doubts about 'hi-octane' too, but I often use it because a tankful of the cheap stuff does seem to get used up quicker. (Can't really ever claim to have noticed any extra power from the extra pennies, although Charlie at Surrey Rolling Road reckoned cheap fuel was why the PH fleet M6 made 470hp on the dyno instead of 500+ when we tested it.)

I keep meaning to do a brim-to-brim comparison in the AMG but that would mean driving at a fixed speed somewhere, and well, you know... smile

Filled up at Tesco's on the W/E and their momentum 99 was the same price as the regular stuff @ circa £1.30 a litre. Anyone else seen this at Tesco's or was it just a mistake?
I spotted it as well.

Ah, but you do get polished silver pumps, uniformed attendants and a courtesy windscreen wipe.

(Wait, you don't, do you...)

Cars and cities have had their day. Cars are making less and less sense as a means of commuting.
Get on you bike and use the car for fun, it's a smoother love affair that way.

Fuel prices are getting ridiculous.

That 63 AMG is an awesome.

Can't help but notice how cheap and tacky that interior looks, compared the Mercs of old!

Why on earth do you bother to drive?! You could happily walk that in about 30mins and cylce it in 15! I utterly hate having to drive to work. If I could take any other option I'd be straight there. Sadly....public transport from the East of Leicester to an old WW2 airfield in Warwickshire isn't exactly forthcoming or straight forward, and as good as it would be for my health, a 99 mile round trip on my pedal bike 5 days a week is pushing it somewhat!

Not meaning to be harsh, but I don't have any sympathy for anyone who sits in traffic for 30mins a day to travel less than 10miles!

Isn't the whole point of being able to buy a C63 that you want fuel prices to get to such a level that no-one other than you can afford to be out on the soon to be empty roads? Bring on £2 a litre I say...

? Is that engine not running quite a high CR and thus although it may not pink (thanks to sensors etc) it should only be run on > 97 RON?

I have done economy tests in the past on engines which didn't require 98RON and found that I was returning 10% better economy on long runs where I was running the engine lean and it only cost 7% more so it was a no brainer. Back then I was doing 30K a year in a 1.6 8 valve with about 120bhp.

the VQ35HR I run just now specifies min 97 RON and it only occasionally gets anything other than Optimax and never anything less than 97RON. I've no reason to run the lower octane fuel, either from an economy perspective or one of maintianing my engine's health as I do use her when she's warm (only 205bhp per tonne).

Can someone tell me then why having swapped out of an RS4 with a 4.2l V8 which was 346gms CO2 into an S5 with a 3 litre supercharged V6 (which supposedly puts out 219gms of CO2) I'm now struggling to get 20 mpg whereas in the RS it would comfortably do 25?

isn't it petrol mixed with bioethanol? The less oil used to create the fuel the less it's affected by oil prices I guess?

What mildly performing diesel are you driving?
I get a solid 28.5 mpg from my 3.4 Boxster S! OK, not London driving.
Any decent 170+bhp TD should give the right side of 40 even in cities, shirley?
