RE: Driven: Audi RS3 Sportback

This does seem to fit the bill for my next car rather well. Apart from the wheels...
Please don't misinterpret this as some kind of silly online "anti-Audi" attack, rather a genuine interest in your comment above. When you say that this car "fits the bill", could you please give us a brief spec sheet of what it is you are looking for in a car. I ask because I'm struggling to see how £40k couldn't get a "better" car than that, whatever that might mean.

What a really nice looking, tidy little car. Shame Audi's are usually driven by cks.
Excellent, yet another well informed and constructive post to kick this thread off in the best possible way. There have been some right tts joining PH recently
"An RS3 will appeal to those who want to enjoy a fast, safe, comfortable and well-built car, and who want to know that there are deep reserves of grip and pace available should they wish to plumb them."
Nail, meet head. Summed it up perfectly.
And not all Audi drivers are c@$ks. Some are, but so are some BMW drivers, and some Lexus drivers, and so on...

But what does manage similar performance and practicality for the same price? There are plenty of 2-seaters like the Cayman in the market which obviously aren't really competitors; the Focus RS manages similar performance, but lacks the perceived quality and badge-snob value (which are hugely important in this sector). Even the 1M, its most obvious competitor, is only going to be available as a coupe, severely impacting its credentials as a family car; and will the 1M be that much cheaper? I can't understand why everybody thinks this car is sooooo overpriced.
Its 40k, what else will get you to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds so quickly for less. Wasn't the Focus RS 500 over 35k. People, please don't start quoting used cars as comparison as its not like for like. The 1 series M is likely to be 40k+ as well, a cayman is 50K.

would have the BMW 1M over this any day of the week, month, year, etc....just looks like a S3 with chav wheels, bodykit and a chip upgrade (yes I know its a different engine). The beemer strikes me as a drivers car, whereas this is a mini-estate for the family man who wants a bit of pace when he's dropped the kids off (no bad thing at all, just not a driver's car). Not a huge fan of Audi myself, they have only ever made two great cars in my opinion (RS4 and R8) and I prefer a bit of sporting excellence and breeding meself.

When you say EVER, I assume you only mean the last 10 years otherwise your judgement is rather cloudy. Audi might not be the last word in vehicle dynamics but they've made some great cars in their time. It's an odd car. The power/performance and price put it skyward in the compact 5-door bracket that the price equates to sports cars. This simply makes it a difficult (or odd) choice for the average 20 or 30-something.
Have a feeling that Audi marketeering won't want me to call it a "hot hatch", as the image they are chasing is probably "compact sports", to justify the odd price and awkward exterior styling.
I know I've said odd too much but... I think it is!

40k base for a mingy 5 door model where the whole range is being replaced in a few months... Good luck with that. And the Gold GTI 5 door looks so much nicer.
(Any car would be fun for a journalist on an all expenses trip to the South of France/Monaco. And even the Focus RS 2 worked well on the super smooth col de Vence.)
