Correct way to splice one wire into another

I'm with the stripping back outer and soldering, the only other thing I do different is not using insulation tape but use self -amalgamating tape. Makes a tight seal around the joint and is not effected by heat unlike insulation/electrical tape.

I would use these but you need a heat gun on them, if you can't a heat gun on it I would cut and twist then solder but also have a glue filled heat shrink over it.
