RE: SOTW: Ford Granada 2.8i Ghia X
Discussion
Another Top Shed.
As a child growing up in the 80's I recall these top end Granny's being seriously desirable bit of kit. My mother's hair dresser had one of the special edition 'Injections' - Bright red with the black rubber bumper spoiler and seats with (I think) red piping(?) He chopped it in for an XR4i
The model that replaced it never quite had the same cache. When my Father changed cars in 1988 he test drove a Granada Ghia (this would have been the 2.9i) Ultimately, he went for the Carlton CDi, having also drove the Rover 800 (which was my favourite) the Renault 25 (eeek!) and Volvo 760.

First car I ever went more thatn the ton in. A friends dad had one and took us swimming. Three or four kids in the back with no seat belts, child seats, peering over his shoulders to see the magic number come up. Itäs a miracle that weäre all still alive today
wow, did you go swimming with us? we did that on the way to the baths in my step-father's Granada (it was a 2.8iS though)The Donster said:
Just thinking the same thing! Got quite excited when I heard Glynis Barber was coming into Eastenders, then quickly realised that she was some 25 years older...
Go on, give her a chance. You're 25 years older too.I'd say she isn't doing badly. http://www.glynisbarber.com/

My Dad had a fully loaded 'Granada 2.8i Ghia X' (and yes that is what the badging on the boot said) and it was awesome, fabulous Leather seats, A/C, electric everything, lowered Xpack suspension with low profile Goodyear tyres. I got to drive the car a lot as my father was in hospital at the time and I felt I was the luckiest 20 year old around.
Quick as anything but also smooth as silk and quiet. I remember coming home from the hospital late one night after visiting Dad with my Mum asleep in front next to me and getting up to 120 (indicated) with ease and almost in complete silebnce, she never knew a thing....;)
I've often wondered what happened to PCW 888X.

Anyone who describes a car as 'she' in an advert is clearly a paisley sock wearing, leather elbow patched, St Bruno pipe smoking geek and Morgan wannabe owner.
This just screams money pit everywhere. How much to sort out all that's wrong? Diff, dipstick, electrical gremilins? No tax or MOT dented to buggery and he still wants a bucket of sand?
Trot on.
Ah, making stereotypes hey? Your profile says you live in Devon, yet you use sayings such as "bucket of sand" & "trot on", a wannabe cockney gangster, that's seen one too many Guy Ritchie movies This just screams money pit everywhere. Oh, alright then.I'd say she isn't doing badly. http://www.glynisbarber.com/
My Dad still has one, two tone blue metallic in immaculate condition. Takes it out of the Garage to play Golf and tucks it away again.
Lovely car, worth bugger all but lovely all the same.
If petrol wasn't so damm expensive (he is a pensioner after all), he would use it on long journeys instead of his 2010 Prius.

Blimey, first time I've had a car featured as a Shed Judging from some of the comments, I've let myself in for a bit of a kicking too....
OK - to answer some of the criticisms:
YES - it does seem like there's loads & loads of niggles, but this IS a 1980s car full of 1980s electrics - you should be amazed any of them work at all!
Someone mentioned the dipstick - of the 6 Mk2s I've owned at various times, only the first had a working electric dipstick, and even that was temperamental. If anyone knows of a working one, I'll buy it... but I'll put it on my project car first
I think I've pointed out 3 or maybe 4 bits of rust. That's seriously clean for any '80s Ford that's not been freshly restored. Rot will NOT be a problem on this car for many years to come.
I know it's been said before, but I really don't see why this can't get a ticket. The only possible problem might be emissions, as she's failed on that before.
BTW: I make no apologies about calling "her" a "her". She doesn't have a name though, if that's any consolation?
Still, if that's what it's going to take to keep you buggers quiet.....

Sorry, going to have to take you to task on this one: 1) Diff - nothing whatsoever wrong with it, no whines rattles or clonks. It just seems to be too low geared for the car, somehow. Makes crashing through all those cardboard boxes much easier though. Dipstick + electrical "gremlins" - see above. And yeah, OK, I don't have the technical knowhow to fix the blower switch. The hazard flashers fixed themselves (go figure). And there's only one dent to speak of; again, I don't have the skills or the time, quite frankly, to fix it. Otherwise I would!ninos said:
Nice shed but I'm always a bit dubious when a vendor states he has too many other projects plus the lack of test and ticket. You would have to blow alot of cash to even get it back on the road (otherwise the vendor would have MOT'd it already) and probably worth more in parts.
The car has been parked at the back of a very full industrial unit for the past 3 years. It's only because I'm now having to move into smaller premises that I'm having to sell at all - that and I bought a ropey estate to work on. I already have 2 vehicles on insurance, I'm not sure I can afford a 3rd, not for any length of time at any rate. I'm not sure where you get the "would have to blow a lot of cash" from??? Some insurance so you can drive it to the MoT place, and £55 on the MoT, ought to be enough. Maybe a few quid to a mobile tuner first? Hell, if the insurance isn't too steep, I'll do it myself (watch this space, as they say).OllieC said:
I dont think the price is a million miles out, if the body / chassis is pretty much rust free.
If I were the seller I would put it through an MOT, at least then you would have a good diea as the buyer what needs doing, for the sake of £50 or whatever, it must make the sale easier ?
Ollie - I agree. The problem is getting the insurance sorted for a reasonable price; with the best will in the world, it's going to quadruple the price of the MoT....If I were the seller I would put it through an MOT, at least then you would have a good diea as the buyer what needs doing, for the sake of £50 or whatever, it must make the sale easier ?

It was always going to be difficult following last weeks Jag... IIRC these 2.8 had surprisingly poor performance eg 0-60 in 11.5 top speed 115mph, and wasn't luxurious enough for this not to matter, not good shedding this week, must try harder(!)
Agreed... bit disappointed. A lot more out there! Next week... next week...

Get some day insurance or else drive it to the MOT on 3rd party insurance that is usually included for other cars once over 25. Hell trailer it to the MOT if necessary.Still, if that's what it's going to take to keep you buggers quiet.....
I'll go with the others. If it could get an MOT you'd have done it, ergo I would have zero confidence that it will pass without major work.
