I would like a family sized car (either Mondeo or Focus size) which is reasonably quick, nice to drive and reasonably economical.

I've got a Mondeo (I know boring) Titanium X Sport at the minute 2.5 Turbo Petrol which I have 'bluefinned' to 260 hp and it is a good fit. The only problem is the fuel economy.

I noticed there is a 2.2 turbo diesel Mondeo which is 200 hp (and I guess that could be chipped to get a bit more power)
http://www.buyacar.co.uk/ford_mondeo_diesel_hatchb... which seems to be about £21k (about £6k off list price)

Or the New Focus http://www.buyacar.co.uk/ford_focus_diesel_hatchba... but its only 2k cheaper, and slower.

Anything else ? - I'd consider petrol as well as long as it is significantly better than the 30mpg claimed combined cycle for my current Mondeo. The Golf GTIs look nice but they are quite a bit more money -

The 2.2TDCI Mondeo is probably about as good as you'll get.

What sort of MPG are you actually getting from the 2.5T?

Mazda 6 MPS?
I'm sure they get about 30mpg - and they look pretty nice in my opinion smile

EDIT:
Just realised you said you want MORE than 30mpg ...
Ummmmm, A4 2.0 TDI?

If you like the Mondeo there's a replacement for the 2.5T now, a 2.0 eco boost with much better mpg and only slightly slower.

Otherwise 330d?

thanks all - I'll add all those to my shortlist (may need to get a recent second hand BMW or Audi, but I'm fine with that)

Unless it's all motorway driving that you're doing 25-30 mpg is bloody good. I'm averaging 16mpg at the moment with mixed use.

Last year I bought the Mondeo ST TDCi, it was an old one ('55 plate), but came with every possible option.

I'm getting average 33mpg out of it, which is usual commute on A roads and one long commute a week on a road dual carriageways.

She's also very quick (for what she is) when I put my foot down, 0-60 in 8.5 apparently.

She's an excellent all rounder that I really like and like the look of, I'll run her into the ground for sure, won't change until I really need to.
