I bought my 1st car in the summer 1996 (a lovely 1985 C plated Fiesta) and remember paying around 75 pence per litre for petrol.

That's my baseline, I cannot remember it being cheaper than that.

How cheap was it for you?

38.7p/litre May 1984. Fiat 132 cost me £400.00 to buy and £300.00 to insure as my first car

I also passed my test in 1996 and bought my first car. Petrol was 55.9 a litre then so 75p a litre is wrong for that year. Take a look at this: http://www.ukpia.com/files/pdf/unleaded-95-petrol-...

I worked in a petrol station when I was 16 and remember it being around 70p

£50 per month for unlimited use of the pumps for personal and business use.
Best thing I've ever had in my life really, the joys of company cars smile

A gallon being 4.5 litres, you paid 10.5 pence/ litre? When was that?

50-odd pence a gallon I think for 2 star in my Honda SS50 moped around 1975. May have been a little more because I used to fill it in half gallons - perfectly adequate at 130mpg.

When I got my first job I used to pay 47.5 per litre at Keith's Garage in Aylesbury

How I miss those days. £10 would get me nearly half a tank in the Capri

5/- a gallon, or 5.5p a litre. Sounds cheap, but a gallon was 1.1% of a weeks pay....

Sorry guys - I found a little notebook I used at one time when I was a student, and in the back, I found a record of petrol use a liitle bit later, probably late 70's early 80s - and it was 32.5p per gallon (yes GALLON!).

The cheapest I've ever bought petrol was in early 1973 when a new petrol station opened and had a promotion at 25p per gallon. The usual price was 33p per gallon.

Remember filling up my dads car always brim and it was £15 ... That was I'm guessing a 63ltr tank.
It was week in week out and he used to complain about as diesel to buy was way cheaper than petrol.

Also how many remember being able to buy two stroke petrol - bought it for the mower and strimmer but mopeds filled up, not sure which cars though any ideas
