1998, average UK price was 65 pence / litre. However, I had the good fortune to live in NI, right beside the border... between all the laundered/stolen fuel I usually paid about 30p/l. Quite galling to pay more than 4 times as much nowadays.

1st car I had was a Ford Anglia and petrol was 25p gallon. Even that seemed a lot at the time. Remeber going to work on a Lambretta LD125 and buying 2/6d worth + a shot of 2 stroke. It lasted ages.
Last week I filled up and it cost £100

I remember going to London from Newcastle with my Dad in 1986, and him driving around for ages looking for cheaper fuel because he refused to pay £1.90 per gallon (41.7p per litre) to fill up.

I remember in 1988 being able to fill my VW Polo up for £8.

I remember my mother be-moaning the fact sometime in the late seventies that £10 didnt fill her Volvo estate up.

I half filled the tank on my fiesta and thought "I could have bought a CD for that price!". Fast forward to today and I could have bought a small shelf of them. I suspect in a couple more years it will be the same cost as a decent CD player.

I worked in a petrol station in the late 80's just when I passed my test, 4 star was £1.75 a gallon (about 38p per litre) and diesel was £1.64. Diesel cars weren't very common back in those days.

Don´t think so, I started a part time job in a petrol staion about then , was about 4s 11d/gallon, more like a crown. Not just relying on my memory -

DAMN...you are right/I was wrong!
It cost me £2 to fill the old man's car; nearly 5bob to fill the Quickly.

As soon as I read your correction a big light bulb went off in my head as I remembered handing over two notes for the fuel.

Mea culpa and best, B
